HELP! Is Pongo okay?!

Pongo has seemed absolutely fine until about an hour & a half ago when I got home. I immediately went to feed him & Gizmo. They are usually very excited & wait anxiously to get their food. Gizmo was still excited but Pongo was laying in the corner of his cage & didn’t move at all. After feeding Gizmo I sat in front of Pongo’s cage & tried to get his attention. He was laying all smushed down in his “sleepy bunny” way, as if he had been napping. Normally, this would not concern me, but after shaking the bag, pouring food in his bowl & making it perfectly clear that there was food to be eaten he still did not move. I tried hand feeding him a piece but he just sat up a little & repositioned himself.

Also, when I got home, I noticed that he had peed outside of his cage. He hasnt done this in years(this is what initially concerned me). I picked him up, flipped him over & did a quick look to make sure there was no gunk in his eyes, nose, no dirty feet. Everything LOOKS fine. After I put him down he hopped into his litterbox, where he is still laying down. I tried to interest him in food again but nothing. I looked at his water bottle & he has been drinking, but not quite as much as I would like. He ate hay this morning &, like I said, seemed perfectly fine.

One more thing: When I was just over by his cage trying to offer him food again I noticed he was breathing very, very quickly & his nose was moving faster than usual. I don’t think any of this has to do with heat because it has been very cool in my room, so my main concern is if this could be some kind of urinary thing? I’m quite concerned

It definitely sounds like Pongo is “off” enough to warrant a visit to a veterinarian. From here it sounds like vague and unspecific symptoms, but symptoms all the same (suddenly not interested in food, peeing outside the cage/litterbox). I have noticed that when my own rabbits get sick they start off incredibly subtle and work their way up… they mask illness well, sometimes for a long time. I’d give your vet a ring and see how soon you can get an appointment. Hope everything is OK!!!!

Unfortunately, the only rabbit vet around isn’t open until monday. My mom is going to take him if things aren’t looking up by then. I’m going to keep a close eye on him & hope that he is just a sleepy, sleepy bunny.

It’s always possible… animals are talented at fakeouts sometimes too. Even if there is something off, at least it doesn’t sound like an emergency at this point- I’d just keep a really close eye on him until Monday to make sure he doesn’t get any worse. Good luck!

Thanks! I just got done cleaning both Pongo & Gizmo’s cages & Pongo seems to be a bit better. He managed to hop out of his litter box long enough for me to examine & thoroughly clean it. He hopped back in for a few minutes but after finishing his cage he has since hopped out a couple times, taken a couple sips of water & is now eating! So perhaps he was just in super sleepy bunny mode? Either way, I’ll continue to monitor him just to be safe

Does he normally spend a lot of time in his litterbox? It does sound like something urinary. Mine do the same thing. Pee on the floor, sit hidden and look sleepy, refuse all food and visit the box without always going. I’ve never known for sure if it’s a UTI or gas episode but after a vet visit and some baytril, they come around.

You could always feel his tummy and make sure he doesn’t have any gas even though it doesn’t sound like gas. You would just need to see if his tummy feels doughy and is distended. Eddie has gotten gassy twice and baby gas x helped a lot along with massaging his tummy. Eddie also does fake outs as well where he just wants me to fuss over him. But that’s really rare and seriously…nothing else is wrong with him – no potty issues, no tummy issues, no respiratory issues. He just gets all pouty and depressed. But I have a weird and strange little boy though. lol
