help, got a new bunny (fourth one!) and the oldest ones are going through stasis???

Hi all, so I got Bamboo a friend after it was obvious I wouldn’t be able to bond her to Moomoo and Lulu.  So everybody has been having rotating time out.  Moomoo and Lulu I’ve had for a few years in a Leith PEtwerks condo.   Bamboo was living on the third floor, I’ve had her 6 months.  So I got Bamboo a bunny named Puni so she could have a companion since I work 9 or 10 hours every day.  I got them a new condo and now Moomoo and Lulu have a two story condo, and Bamboo and Puni are in a separate two story condo next door.  That happened about two weeks ago.

Well on Friday (almost a week ago) moomoo stopped eating.  I took her into the vet on Saturday and the vet said she looked ok but her stomach looked really full in the XRay.  She put her on the usual stasis medication and since them Mooms has been making tiny poops and eating more and more.  Mooms has had stasis before on two occasions but got through it ok after a few days.

So just as Moomoo is recovering, it looks like Lulu has stasis now too.  Lulu is not eating and her poops are tiny.  I took her to the vet and she’s in the same situation as Moomoo.  Lulu has only had stasis for one day in her health history since I’ve had her because she usually has such an amazing appetite.  She got over that one in a day.

The babies Bamboo and Puni are fine, even though they are the most stressed out in terms of bonding?

I can’t figure out what’s wrong with Moomoo and Lulu, what triggered the stasis.  I think it’s the stress of another new bunny in the house, but my husband says it’s the carpet in the condos.  The second floor has carpet and they have a cat condo on the bottom floor.  They have lived in that carpeted condo for a year without incident, so I dont’ think it’s just that.

Is it the stress of another new bunny?  What should I do?  I am trying to get them through the stasis  and it’s looking good for Moomoo so far, but how can I ensure it won’t come back?  I’m going to remove all carpet tonight.

Yes, stress can bring on stasis.

Since Puni and Bamboo are ok, could you move their condo across the room or into a different room temporarily?

Another thing to review is any different foods they’ve had this week that might have triggered this.

I can try to divide as much as possible in the living room, but i only live in a one bedroom condo. i can’t move the condo into our bedroom.

they haven’t had anything different. luckily Moomoo looks like she is in the clear but poor Lulu is having a hard time. She hates being handled so it’s terrible to give her her meds. I feel really terrible doing this to my original babies. I don’t want them to think they aren’t still loved. It’s so weird though because they don’t like pets or attention. Ack.

You could try adding a “divider” so their cage, so they can’t see the new bun, then they only will have the stress of smelling new bun and it might calm them a bit. Are they eating the carpet? If they are, it can cause issues, but if not I don’t see how it could be the carpet.

I think the divider is a great idea. Not only does it block visual contact but will also make them feel more secure. I’d use coroplast since it’s cheap and can be cut to any size and zip tied right onto the condo

I actually have them divided now, so all day long they are separated. At night though, when the babies are out, the girls can see them, and vice versa. I put an x-pen surrounding the girls’ or babies’ condos so that they can’t get to eachother when they each have their time out. I just started to put a sheet over the x-pen so they can’t even see eachother.

They are digging at the carpet more. I will try to keep them apart as much as possible. I don’t have a lot of space but I’ll do more visual dividers.

I was just thinking Puni is the only boy in the house (he’s the new one), could that be what’s freaking them out?

Not a divider like keep them separated, but a divider like, large piece of cardboard or something so they can’t visually see each while in their cages.

Happy to report the seniority buns are all better and quite feisty. Also happy to report that Puni just groomed Bamboo for a lengthy period of time for the first yesterday! I’m so relieved they are probably going to be bonded. Now I dream of bonding all four…it would be so cool to have a bunch of bunnies running around.
