I have 2 female bunnies with a month between them both from same mum and dad but different litters one is almost 4 months and the other is almost 3 months I have been starting the bonding process with them for a few weeks now and they seem to becoming very good friends they only go together when I’m at home and separate the rest of the time. They are sitting together and grooming each other quite a bit now but I’m not sure what to do about putting them in the same hutch, they are not spayed yet but my vet said he will do both at the begging of October so only 6 weeks away he also said they seem happy together and I can try putting them together now but I’m unsure. The last thing I want is for them to fight and then not be able to have them together at all! My questions are:

Have they already bonded if they are grooming?

Should I try putting them together now?

If not should I do it straight after they are spayed?

If not then either will all my hard work bonding now be a waste if I need to start from scratch?

          Welcome to BB!

Unaltered rabbits can’t be bonded. They might get along for now, especially since they are quite young (rabbits tend to get along fine before hitting puberty), but it’s not a true bond. That can only be established after spaying/neutering. At this age, hormones could kick in very suddenly, so I would separate them until a month after they have been spayed to give the hormone levels time to go down. I don’t think it’s worth the risk of them fighting just to keep them together for a few more weeks. Also, baby bunnies are very difficult to sex correctly, if one of them is actually a male you could end up with an oops litter.

The fact that they have spent some time together so far without fighting may or may not make bonding easier down the road. If they did have a fight however, it could very well make things more difficult, rabbits remember very well and can hold a grudge.

Good luck with your two little ones! Do you have any pictures of them?

Hi thank you for your help its such a shame this isn’t a true bond they are so cute when they are together and they seem happier but the last thing I want is a fight so defiantly sounds best to separate them for now I guess its only a few months till I can try again! When I take them to be spayed should I take them in separate carriers? Fingers crossed they get on this well once they have been done!! I have tried to upload some photos I hope it has worked!
