My Dad gave my bunny a small piece of jicama about 30min ago when I wasn’t home. Google says that jicama is toxic to bunnies. Is it really??! What should I do? Will it harm her?

From previous threads on jicama, it looks like it is not recommended, and I do see some sites listing it as toxic to bunnies, but no references.

          How much did she eat?

With anything weird that a bun eats, it’s best to push hay and water, and monitor her. Since it was a small piece, that’s the route I would go personally, but of course the safest thing would be to get her to the vet. I can’t find any info on just how toxic it is, or any references on it at all for that matter.

Do you have an ER vet that sees rabbits that you can call and ask? Vets have the best lists of what is actually toxic or not.

She ate about a 2inch piece. I am on the phone right now with RSPCA poison control, and have the local emergency vet hospital link and address ready in case. Any other advice?

I think RSPCA poison control will be able to advise you the best! Good thinking.

Might be good to call the ER vet and see if they treat rabbits as well. Even if not, they may be able to provide basic supportive care if needed (fluids, temperature monitoring, pain management, etc.) until the regular vet opens.

Let us know what they say!

The plant itself is toxic to everyone, not just bunnies. Other than that, I really don’t know much about it. I don’t know if the “edible” part (root) is harmful to bunnies or not. You might be surprised by how many so-called toxic plants bunnies have consumed here on BB with seemingly no ill effects.

I agree that a poison hotline would be a very useful tool. Surely they will know and they can advise you.

Thank you Wick for looking into it. The whole plant except the peeled root is toxic as LBJ says, but if the peeled root is deemed toxic to buns “just” because it’s starchy, the bun should be fine. Starch should be avoided in a bun’s regular diet, but a one-time small piece won’t have toxic effects.

jojothebun, we’d be very interested in updates!

I’m locking the thread Wick linked too, but it only locks for posting, it will of course still be good for reading. Just so we keep all further answers in the same thread.

That’s what I was thinking… I feel like the word “toxic” gets thrown around a lot on the internet.
