My Dad gave my bunny a small piece of jicama about 30min ago when I wasn’t home. Google says that jicama is toxic to bunnies. Is it really??! What should I do? Will it harm her?

A quick search does imply that it’s toxic to bunnies.

Pay close attention to your bunny’s behaviour in the next few hours/days. If she stops pooping, appears to be uncomfortable or seems really lethargic, then bring her to a vet immediately. Also make sure she is eating lots of hay and drinking lots of water as these will help push the jicama through.

I also find that it’s toxic to bunnies, but I can’t find any source for those claims. All parts of the plant except the peeled root are toxic to everybody, both humans and animals, but I’m guessing your father gave your bun a piece of peeled root? It seems fine for mice and dogs.

You could call a vet and ask. If jicama is commonly consumed in the area you live in, vets might know off hand if it’s toxic for rabbits. A vet could give activated charcoal (don’t do that yourself) but that only works as long as the poison, if there is poison, is still in the tummy. Other than charcoal they can give supportive care with fluids and electrolytes etc.

Plant poisoning as a rule give symptoms within the first 6 hours after ingestion. Signs of poisoning are lethargy, seizing, drooling, unresponsiveness etc. Rabbits are physically unable to vomit, so there will be no vomiting even if the bun has eaten something toxic.

Did some cursory research and found that jicama is considered toxic because it is a high-starch food. High-volume starches moving through a rabbit’s small intestine can’t be digested and wind up in the cecum (pocket-detour in the intestines where cecotropes are formed). The starch encourages growth of “toxin-producing” bacteria, which causes illness.
