Last Wednesday my bunnies just suddenly started shedding like crazy. My bunnies usually shed a little all the time, especially at this time of the year, but this time they are shedding huge clumps of hair and their fur has a ragged look where large patches of fur are a lot shorter than the longer hair because it is growing in. Is this normal?

          Sounds normal to me.

My bunnies do the same thing.

Sounds perfectly normal for bunnies in general, but it sounds like you’ve had yours for over a year and he didn’t do this in the past.

This year, Porky started his molt right at the eyebrows, which was very amusing.

                Oh dear – very normal.

Chacha has began a HUGE molt.

Her back area is shedding A LOT, and fur is STILL coming off! o_O!

Yup, that’s what’s called “Blowing the coat”. Bindi is going through that right now. It’s unbelievable how much fur comes off a 5lb bunny!

I almost envy those of you whose bunnies blow their coat. Sammy didn’t seem to be shedding for a very, very long time. Then this month it comes off in quantity when I comb her. I do that 2xday, but it’s still shedding for at least a month now. (A month is normal.) If a bunny blows its coat fast, it’s kind of a lot but it may not take as long to be finished. Not to worry.

And a bunny can shed up to 4 times a year, so don’t be alarmed if, in 3 months, it happens some more.

You should see Bindi right now. He’s covered in bald spots and tufts. He’s blowing his coat but it’s still seems to be taking forever. He went to the vet yesterday and as soon as she saw him she said “Oh My God. What happened to his face?” He’s got a big pink bald spot smack in the middle of his face. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him shed out so weird before.

Noob question, do all buns shed? Like, nethie dwarfs too? I know the weather here is no where near as warm as it is there, so I don’t know if Thane will shed!

Sounds normal to me, mine all blow their coats in different ways. Charlies the funniest, one day he just looks a size bigger all over, you brush and comb it all off and he looks normal, then the next day he’s all puffed up again…lol

I like the patches thing Daisy does, looks like someone has gone nuts with the clippers.

Powder just started his first heavy shed, he’s not too fond of me pulling the clumps out though lol he gave me the “if you do that again, I will bite you” glare when I started working the clump of shedding fur off his face.

Oh my goodness, my bunny is losing hair like CRAZY!! He loves to sit in front of the floor vents where the AC blows out and I gently pluck his loose hairs out, so they blow allllll over the room. I’ve gotten one of those fur-removing mitts (with the rubbery fingers in the palm area) and I use a slicker brush with rubber tips on him, but good ol’ plucking seems to get the most gone the quickest.
I get clump after clump off of him. Shoo!
