My bun almost had a heatsroke it was not even 80 degrees he was fine but he started panting and stuff all the sudden I immedietly place him by the AC and gave him a cold water bottle a damp rag and a bunch of ice packs. I wet his ears. He is now doing a bunch better but I dont know why he had the hearstoke. I have damp towels on top of his cage to try and keep it cooler. He has linolium or carpet to choose from to go on. I dont want this to happen to him again EVER. It scared me so much. I am afraid to leave him alone for even a second. I think he is extremly suceptible to heat strokes mabey. I want ways to cool down his cage area it is nic cubes. I am getting him a portable fan. Please help

Oh gosh – I’m glad he’s doing better now. Do try get some fluids into him. Give some wet veggies and something like diced celery that holds alot of water. Temps nearing 80 and over are about as high as rabbits will tolerate. They are much more susceptible to heat than cold. It’s a good idea to keep things like bottles of frozen water and a fan on during these temps before they get overheated. Has he been drinking plenty of water during the warmer weather? You might want to get him checked out by a vet to see he’s not ill and was therefore more susceptible to this heat. Good to hear he is ok right now though!

Oh, I am so glad he is doing better! Some bunnies do not handle heat well when it just begins to reach 80. Especially if they are not used to it. Also, if your bunny is much older, very young, has small ears or long hair, those things can make it harder for your bunny to regulate their body temps.

When you turn on the fan, don’t point it directly on him in his cage. If you can direct it, especially if it is an oscillating fan, just over the top of the cage so it gets the air to continually circulate rather than blow on him that’s the best. Kind of the way a ceiling fan works to cool off the whole area.

A frozen soda bottle, like a coke with the paper label removed, is great to just lay down on one side of his cage. It gets condensation on the side that he can lick off, plus if he’s hot he can snuggle up to it.

I love, and so does bunny, an ear turban. Get a washcloth very cold and then wring it out so it’s just damp. wrap it gently around both ears and let your bunny wear it for a while. He will cool down a lot and probably not shake it off.

my bun gets like this when it eighty or above. in the morniing i give him frozen water bottles, fans, ice packs- whatever it takes, because he handles heat very poorly. if its really hot he comes in the house.

I used to have an apartment with no AC and my bunnies would get too warm sometimes. One trick I used was freezing a whole 2 gallon milk jug of water and setting it in their cages. Since those things are so thick they stay frozen for a long time. Also, we have tile squares in all of our bunny’s cages and when it gets warm they love to lay on the tile squares because they are cooler than the rest of the cage.

I wonder along with a frozen waterbottle in their house you could put a big gallon milk sized frozen water in front of the fan whle it blows around. That way cool air would be blowing over bunnies cage.

I like that idea of the frozen gallon jug.  Never thought of that.

OH speaking of frozen water bottles I am going to have to freeze one for Cotton.  HE is going to the vet in July and it is hot muggy humid here in sweltering florida.

Something I used when I was traveling with my bunnies was one of those freezer squares – like the ones you can put in lunch pails that stay cold. I wrap them in a towel so I don’t freeze the bunny
