I have a female, un-spayed lion lop that i’ve had for a few months now. Things were going great and we were bonding well and last week we had a little “incident” I went to take her out of her cage and she spazzed out and I didn’t want her to fall so I tensed up and tightened my grip on her and was way more aggressive than I should have been. Ever since, she been acting weird. She cries/whimpers if I put my hand near her to try to pet or move her (to clean her cage) and the other day she actually charged and bit me. I’ve tried giving her time and leaving her alone and she seems to relax and be fine until I go near her. And today I picked her up to clean her cage and she sprayed pee on me when I took her out. Please help I just want my sweet girl back if it’s not too late.

This made me sad. Do you think you may have injured her, or just scared her? Is she able to jump out of her cage on her own? Maybe let her do that and come to you until she’s less afraid?

Her cage really should be where she can access it herself without you having to handle her. Most bunnies as they get older won’t tolerate being handled anyways.

How old is your bun? Cage-aggression and pee-spraying sounds like hormonal behavior more than anything. Pee spraying is not really an insult, it’s a declaration of ownership or even part of rabbit courtship.

This time of year, in the northern hemisphere, intact rabbits tend to go a little crazy. The increase in amount of daylight has a powerful impact on the production of sex hormones. Its jokingly called “March hare syndrome”, and it’s normal.

I agree with the others, she should preferably be able to hop in and out of her cage herself. Most adult rabbits really hate being grabbed and lifted up.

How old is she? you only said you have had her 3 months. Since she is not spayed yet this is most likely the issue, I had my bun spayed at 5 months old by a bunny doctor. before being spayed when she was about 4 months old she started attacking me if I reached in her cage too get her food bowl, she didn’t bite but almost. she also peed a couple times on me while sitting on my lap. this all changed for the better after she was spayed. after they are spayed don’t expect her too change over night, mine took about 3 weeks too stop her bad moods half the day. she is a perfect sweet little bun now, she is 16 months old. and as the others said, bunnies don’t like being picked up. mine only lets me pick her up after a neck massage, a neck massage put’s her in some kind of sleep where her eyes are closed all the way, then when I pick her up and sit her on my lap she opens her eyes and looks around like “whats going on?” and then she wants another neck massage. she’s a silly little girl.
