Argh! Parsley lives free run in my bedroom and has no cage, he has never peed anywhere but his litter box in the 4 moths ive had him, not once! But in the past week he’s decided to pee on my bed, 3 times!! What gives? I’ve caught him mid pee all times and he knows it’s bad and goes and sulks after because I’ve told him off. Why has this suddenly started? It’s nearly winter here and washing my whole quilt is a pain as it takes days to dry! Any help greatly appreciated!
Powder slept on the bed until I rebonded him with Stickers and the only times he peed on the bed were because 1) I was sleeping too close to the edge and he couldn’t get down cause he didn’t want to step over me 2) I got ANY smell but mine on the bed 3) boyfriend would sleep on the floor and block him from his litter box so he’d just jump back in the bed and pee on it … if he sleeps with you, you might be somehow stopping him in your sleep from comfortably getting down. Else, it is a marking behavior and it’s hard to keep them from marking.
Thanks for the quick reply
he can definitly get down and i don’t think it’s the smell thing because the only other person in my room is my boyfriend and he stays over every second night so nothing new there, that and I just put my newly washed quilt on half hour ago and he’s already peed on it argh! Could it been hormonal? He’s never sprayed anything, chinned anything or acted territorial over anything before
(he’s still sulking under the bed lol he looks so disapproving)
It could very well be due to hormones. His age. Might be time to consider getting him desexed.
My bed bun went thru a period of making the bed. He’s now over 1 year old and fixed and hes good about it now. He does go thru times though when he’ll mark but it only lasts a couple days. I assume it’s when his nose is out of joint about something.
If you can’t completely block your bed off from Parsley, consider putting a water proof cover over your quilt. I used a vinyl tablecloth that i lay over my bedding during the day.
Is Parsley doing this while you are in bed or during the day when you are not there?
You can also buy water proof bedding made for kids who wet the bed, it’s vinyl on the bottom usually and cotton on top. You’d have to wash it, but you could probably put one of those over your quilt to avoid having to wash it. Also, remember, they are VERY smell sensitive… so any new cologne, perfume, new shoes, new socks that maybe use a different material, new laundry detergent, fabric softener, anything at all different to their sensitive little noses can set off marking. And yes if he isn’t neutered hormones could be a cause.
he’s getting desexed quite soon so hopefully that might help things, he’s never really shown any hormonal behaviour but he is the right age so maybe thats it! and the tablecloth/waterproof bedding is a brilliant idea i hadnt thought of that! I have had chronic fatigue syndrome for the past year and a half so i study from home and am in my room most of the day usually as i’m still not the best healthwise so i’m always there to catch him in the act but havnt been fast enough to stop him yet! i think i’ll definitly look into the waterproof fabric idea as a temporary solution in the meantime and hope its just a phase!
I’m in agreeance with Jersey Girl on this. Hormones. I have several little Girls ranging from 12 months to 5 months and all of a sudden the day bed is the place to pee.
The same spot every time. I will be hiring a steam cleaner after they have all visited the V.E.T
It is probably hormones kicking in. He wants to make sure you know whats his
Molly got spayed but she still pees on the bed from time to time if I’m not paying attention…its aggravating. Even if you get him neutered it might not fix the problem, so keep that in mind. The best bet is to try to discourage him from getting on your bed.
Roberta – natures miracle takes stains and smell out of beds and furniture when they pee on them, no need for a steam cleaner
I learned that because my ex’s cat peed on our bed, soaked all the way through the mattress and left a huge yellow stain and smelled awful. His mother comes over with a bottle of natures miracle, soaks the bed with it and next day, no smell and no stain. I now keep it at all times on hand. lol
Is Parsley fixed? EDIT: Just saw that he is getting fixed….
Lola had PERFECT litter habits and then suddenly went through a weeks period before she got spayed where she started to pee on EVERYTHING. Couch, recliner, boyfriend, my lap, plants, you name it…it was peed on. We went through lots and lots of white vinegar and febreze that week….
Luckily, she was already due to be spayed the following week and I was hoping that would solve the problem. It did.
She has had one accident since she was de-womanized then and I think it was just because she was almost asleep on the couch getting an ear rub and just got a little too comfortable…oops!
Are you also noticing any other changes? Lola also started humping things and chinning our arms…. funny at first and made a couple really great videos to immaturely send to friends
but annoying after a few days!
Hang in there!
thanks for all the advice! its so hard to keep him off the bed because he’s just so cute…until he pees on it lol! i havnt noticed any other hormonal behaviour such as chinning or being.. amorous which is why i thought it might be something else but i guess i’ll have to wait and see once he’s desexed, i hope it is and that this isnt a permanent thing!
Powder only chins when he has a reason – mainly when he and Stickers are both put into a brand new area and he’s marking against her and he NEVER humped anything until I got Stickers, then only her. Not all males display a lot of hormonal behaviors when left intact and alone, Powder was a perfect angel except… occasionally he’d mark a place. If he’s going on the same spot on your bed all the time, you could try putting a box or something in that spot.
I forgot to mention; if you do use a waterproof cover on top of the bedding, be sure to secure it. Perhaps tuck it in. Otherwise the whole thing plus the bun goes for a big slide. :p
It still can be messy if they pee on it but at least it saves your bedding.
He could be doing it for attention which you will definitely want to discourage. If his peeing makes you jump up and come over, then in his mind peeing=bringing you to him. You may have to prevent him being up there by his choice until he’s more trustworthy. You could allow him to be there for short visits when your right there with him .
he is definitly not selective about his pee spot lol! would be much easier if it was one spot! i would be afraid a box might encourage him? ‘Oh look a nice big box to wee in i KNEW i was supposed to go here’
ive had a waterproof picnic rug on their the past two days and its definitely come in handy quite a few times! unfortunately even with strict supervision he still manages to pee everywhere
i think i might have to implement strict no bed policy in the day and maybe use an x-pen at night until he learns some manners!
Jerseygirl i’m starting to agree it might be some evil bunny game he’s playing, he always binkies away when i tell him off for doing it ![]()
“please mum can i come on the bed now, i promise i’ll be good this time”
goshdarnit! Evil comes in the CUTEST packages sometimes! ![]()
Covering the bed with a waterproof sheet is an option, but at this point, it would be more effective to limit his access since he isn’t neutered yet. People with hormonal bunnies do need to make “the tough choices” sometimes to protect their home. An xpen until he’s neutered and the hormones have settled is not a bad idea.
