Does anyone have experience of feeding rabbits hay with dandelion added into it? I’ve just started giving my rabbits this and I don’t think it agrees with them. Particularly Lily who has suddenly become very lethargic and producing large amounts of glooped caeceotrophic droppings. The droppings are normal in colour just excessive.

She’s not interested in playing with anything and is quite withdrawn. This has only happened since I changed the hay, so that’s what I think it’s down to.

        Anyone have any opinions?

hmm the only dandelion I give Floppy is the fresh ones from the supermarket…
So not sure…on this one..although if you change the diet theres going to be some
tummy issues when changing cause they need to get used to it but they shouldnt
          be lethargic…thats my opinion!

It sounds like a sudden change in diet, but the lethargy worries me.  Rabbits usually become that way when something is seriously wrong and they are trying to hide it, so you just may want to take her to the vet and have her checked out, just to make sure. is she eating her other food and drinking O.K.?

I am assuming it’s dried since it’s with hay – dried dandelions, as many leafy greens when dried, are too rich in calcium, and certain vitamin levels. (can’t remember off the top of my head at the moment – but I wanted to answer this as soon as I saw it) The reason is because the dried greens don’t have the water content that gives it the healthy dilution rate for consumption. I don’t know how much would have to be fed or how quickly a bunny would get sick from that though. My understanding is it would be over time. How long have they been eating this hay?

                Hi All,

well, it’s crisis over. I’ve removed the dandelion hay from the cage the day before yesterday and Lily is back to her old self (hurrah).

I’m just thinking it didn’t agree with her sensitive little tum. Have gone back to fresh meadow hay and she is fine with that. She is back to her old self tormenting the dog!

it’s scary when your perky bunny is suddenly lethargic! glad you were able to figure out so quickly what the problem is and discontinue use of the dandelion hay.
