Hey guys, has this ever happened to you? I was putting hay into Mimy’s pen early this morning and a sharp piece broke off and put a teensy splinter into the tip of my little finger. OUWICH! It was so small I wasn’t able to pluck it out with a tweezers, so I wound up having to use nail clippers and slice a chunk off the end of my finger to remove the splinter. (My eyesight is so bad, I can’t see little things like that, but I sure could FEEL it!)

Do you think hay splinters in our buns’ mouths while they eat it? I would hate to think something like that would become lodged in Mimzy’s gums and hurt him. How would one prevent this from happening?

Oh ouch! I’ve had that happen but used a pumice stone to get it out. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t happen to a rabbit with great frequency. I’ve watched them munch it and they really grate it up finely with their teeth – too fine I think to cause problems.

I have had this happen to me a lot ’cause of the horses too (more hay to feed).  I always wondered the same thing but they must be tougher than us.  The horses eat thistles!  My buns have a wood toy they naw on.  I guess they are just made for it.
