Hay racks you buy from the store are usually too small, but people diy their own all the time. I sewed my own hay bag. I know Victoria Raechel and 101 Rabbits have videos on youtube about the hay racks they use. I keep fresh hay in my rabbit’s litter box and I fill up my hay bag when it gets empty.

Just fyi if you anyone (guilty) bought a tiny hay rack online or from a pet store in haste…. if it’s wooden, you can actually knock every other bar out and it’s usable. I have alfalfa hay hanging in that one, and I use a  wooden wine box for orchard hay. I put paper litter in his litter box towards the back, and a handful of timothy up front..so he has NO EXCUSE not to eat his hay…haha!

** just a disclaimer, he’s under 6 months which is why he’s getting alfalfa in the rack. I honestly think it gives him something to do because he kind of has to work for it.

I’ve seen people use storage containers, cut a hole, sand the edges down, and hang it to the side of the pen. But I guess plastic is questionable.  You can buy wooden wine boxes online, or even ask your local wine shop or liquor store.

I use a metal rack that is meant to hold spare toilet paper rolls. I’ve also seen people use similar looking racks meant to store plastic bags. I just use a clip to attach it to the side of the cage.

I just stick hay in his two litter boxes. Easier to deal with for me and he is happy to flop and eat at the same time. He doesn’t seem to eat anything soiled and tends to stick to the back corners for that part of the business anyway. Occasionally I’ll stick some hay in tubes or he had a little wicker basket I would fill up until he decided to just eat the basket.

I have the small pet store racks but also throw handfuls of hay directly into the box several times a day. They prefer to eat from the box anyways, then they potty on it so they need fresh 🙂
