Does anyone else get itchy bumps after they touch hay? Like if the hay pokes me I get a temporary little itchy bump. It’s usually the more tough pieces of hay too, not the soft pieces. Maybe I have an allergy to it?

I get paranoid about fleas so I’m treating my house for fleas as well (and in the process of getting rabbit safe flea medicine) but this has been happening for a while. Anytime the hay pokes me I get either a white bump similar to a mosquito bite, or a small red bump. They end up going away within 10-50 mins. Which gives me an indication that it’s probably not a bug bite since those suckers tend to last a few hours to a day or two.

Does anyone else have this problem? I used oxbow Timothy hay. I get a 50 lb box shipped to me. Maybe it’s that batch? Maybe I should switch brands?

Ot does sound like you could be allergic to hay. A classic test for allergies is done pretty much exactly like that, by pricking the skin with a small amount of allergen. The result is a mosquito-bite like bump if you are allergic to whatever pricked your skin. It’s called an IgE- skin test. Here’s a description of how it’s done, scroll down to Ig E skin test:

Timothy hay is often the worst hay for people with allergies. I try to avoid Timothy hay for that reason. Some batches are worse than others, but a rabbit doesnt necessarily have to have Timothy hay. Any grass hay that’s good for horses is good for rabbits. My rabbit gets orchard hay and oat hay.
