Hay Cubes

Ok first off HELLOOOOO sorry i have been AWOL for so long but between Uni and the other admin staff at work being away and adding a new cat to my house and the bird shelter being run off it’s feet I just have not had the time.

Anyway, some of you might remember Rufus and all the issue I have with his teeth and the fact that he does not eat hay, I have tried everything and gotten nowhere, anyway the rabbit clinic sold these hay cubes for $4 a small bag and suprise suprise Rufus would eat them.  Anyway the rabbit clinic stopped stocking them due to issues with the supplier and I was back to feeding Rufus a pellet only diet with veggies thrown in when he decides to eat them.

In my search for alternatives i stumbled across a group call Minchies (http://www.minchiesstockfeeds.com.au/) I checked out their hay cubes and they looked the same so rang the company and sure enough they where the suppliers for the rabbit clinic.

Now my only issue is that I have to purchase HUGE bags instead of the small easy to handle bags but the 30kg bag is only $24 a bag from the place that I get them from so a lot cheaper then the small bags and sure enough last night I could hear Rufus chomping away at these cubes and the other guys love them as well, and they smell AMAZING!

Anyway if you have a stubbon rabbit then you should give this brand a try, also if you want to try some and don’t want to commit to a 30kg bag then PM me your deatils and I can send you some of mine as I really really like them.

I’m guessing you can’t order from U.S. stores because of shipping? They definitely sell them in smaller quantities in many online rabbit stores here… look a little different (maybe different hay?)… they’re usually referred to as timothy hay cubes.

We can get the Timothy Hay Cubes over here but Rufus does not eat them, these ones are really compressed more in a pellet form then the cubes that timothy does so when they chew them they sound like they are noring through wood!

I have a 50 poung bag of cubes too lol!!

I never even realized hay cubes for bunnies were the same as for horses so I was buying those silly bags in pet stores, like 5 cubes for eight dollars. 50 lbs of timothy cubes were 12$!!-even if I throw half out that’s awesome.

And my dog also likes them (anything the bunnies get he wants and he’ll eat hay if that’s what it takes!)

Agree at first I was like Where the heck am I going to store 60kg of this stuff and then i was like… oh just wait that was $44 compared to $4 a small bag and I could make about 120 bags up of this which could cost me $480 vs $44 big big big saving! I am ahead and I got a horse storage bin for $80 from the feed shop that holds the 60kg so yeah def the way to buy! Plus bunny love it so win all around!

LOL! I was reading your reply AV and I got to the end of the line that read… “I am ahead and I got a horse…”

And I started laughing! I was thinking that this would probably be the worst reason in the world to buy a horse… because you have some extra hay cubes!!! LOL!!!

My thought is that you could also make a nice donation to a local rabbit rescue. You would still come out ahead money-wise and it would benefit other buns as well.

Beka – I in fact have 3 horses but don’t feed them hay cubes as I they have a habbit of choking on them. I did ask a few of the local rabbit shelters near me and got turned down as they don’t feed them but that is fine my guys are loing them so that is a good thing.

Also … if you did not know ……. goats love the cubes too …. so if you have goats … or know someone that does … you can share some of the cubes with goat friends : >)

I think goat love anything that is eatable or not eatable, heck i have seen goats try and eat tin!

AV very kindly supplied me with some of these hay cube thingys for me to try out with my guys. (Thank you again!) I’m happy to report that Jersey seems to have taken to them. I’ve always had trouble getting her to consistantly eat hay. She has been better of late but selective. Rumball I’m not so worried about as he’s good eating hay and larger stalky pieces. With these, they’ll be convenient to give her when she’s asking for noms or just have them freely available.

They look like mega pellets. : ) They’re hard and I think will be like a chew toy. Plus the hay pieces in them is about 4-5mm long which is great! I can soak them in some juice now and then for a treat. Even thinking can stick them in holes in a large plank of wood to anchor them and use like a chew toy.

a feed store gave me some samples of hay cubes that look like large pellets too.    mine turned their nose at them.
