I know hay is supposed to be unlimited…but my rabbit eats A LOT. I put a huge handful in at night and it is completely gone in the morning.  She seems to eat it so fast and so much.  Should I continue to give her unlimited amounts or is this normal?  I feed her pellets and veggies as well so I know she’s not starved.  I just don’t see how all this hay can fit into her little tummy!  She’s only 4.5 lbs.

I hate to say it, but you do need to keep the hay going. There is no danger from it with her that I am aware of. It would be like us eating very small rocks – it just goes through the system. But in her case, it helps keep her clear and keeps the teeth down.

With grazing animals such as rabbits, it’s normal for them to want to munch a lot during their waking hours. Hay is mostly fibre and not a lot of nutrients so it’s good to feed as much as they want to eat. The more hay you feed, the more poops that come out, so it shouldn’t make her gain much weight. It’s the pellets that cause weight gain. I find my rabbits eat more hay in the night than during the day.

            Are you feeding Timothy hay?

Ok thanks. It’s also hard to keep it unlimited because I’m gone to school and work during the day…so she’ll eat it all before I get a chance to refill it. I’ll just work on putting more in there. And yes, I am feeding her Timothy hay.

that’s awesome your bun eats a lot of hay! that will go a long way towards preventing tummy troubles!

you might try and get a larger storage solution for your hay. there are different kinds of hay mangers and holders you can purchase or build. what are you putting hay in now?

It’s in a hay holder that I bought and it seems to hold a good amount of hay. I’ll just keep letting her go at it!
