Hi all.  I haven’t posted in a while because I haven’t been doing much work with Chance and Andre lately (time was an issue, plus I just burned out on getting no results from them).  I’m getting ready to start trying to bond them again and I think I have a plan of “attack.”  They seem to responds well to both being pet at the same time so I’ll do more of that, and Chance (who is a Dutch) loves to be groomed so I’m going to try putting banana on her head and holding on to her while Andre grooms her (if he decides he wants to).  My hope is she’ll once again associate Andre with grooming and once I can start to trust her not to bite I might reverse this trick.

I have noticed one thing.  When Chance gets aggressive I often catch a quick hint of a musky smell.  When I got her I was told she was a he who had been neutered when actually she was a partially fixed female.  I’ve never noticed this with other rabbits so I’m not sure if this is normal and if it should be happening with a spayed female.  Any opinions on this would be great.

odors my neutered male needed cleaning of his scent glands I had noticed a strong smell and got to the task at hand. oh did he need a cleaning 2 weeks later I cleaned again he wasn’t so bad then however he always had a strong smell to him and since I cleaned his hind end scent glands the other bun started biting him hard. they used to get along great. til then. after that I had to seperate them. could have been jealousy too but that scent he had a strong scent to his hind end. even after being cleaned back there. so it could have been that smell and jealousy that his friend starting biting him over.

as far as jealousy I had the smelly bun on couch petting him the other one came up and started thumping his foot til I petted him with both hands at the same time. I couldn’t pet them both at the same time he wouldn’t stop thumping til I stopped petting the smelly bun. so could have been the jealousy too. I never knew for sure.

hmm never heard of a partially fixed female.

both of my unspayed girls give off a strong odor… a musky / skunky kind of smell… when they’re acting territorial or displaying dominance.  i’m going to get pinky spayed soon & i’m curious if this will die down after her hormones die down.  i’ve always assumed it was due to hormones.  i have noticed with baby bun, that when she smells this way her scent glands can use cleaning too. i think because of secreting extra ‘smell’ when trying to claim territory with their scent.

dramaqueen, would your vet complete the spay or did they say it was best to leave it as it is? The musky odor happens when bunnies get territorial, I hope that things go well for you!

She is actually fully spayed, my vet took care of it shortly after we made the discovery. Also, her scent glands were cleaned not to long ago. I’ll just to to keep an eye on her, and at least it gives me some idea if she’s nipping v. biting I guess (trying to look on the bright side). Thanks.
