Eclipse has stasis. I know she ate this morning, but did not eat her dinner, greens, or fresh hay. I gave her a touch of metacam and some simethicone. I also gave her a bit of fluids because she has not drank any water since this morning (definitly appreciating using waterbottles right now!). I have been massaging her for a bit. Her tummy is grumbling, though I don’t know if that is good or bad. She doesn’t seem to be majorly bloated, though her stomach is a touch harder than Nova’s and seems to be more full at the top than the bottom. My big worry is that it is a forgien object block. It is almost 3 in the morning here, and she seems to be in fairly stable condition so I am going to give the simethicone a chance to work before trying an enema and more simethicone, and if that doesn’t work, take her in to the ER. I’ll try to update soon.

One medium sized poop. Fairly hard, but with a little moisture. Second dose of simethicone. I am sooooooo tired at this point. I am too worried to sleep though. My stomach is hurting too, so I totally feel what she is going through. I’ll give her a third dose soon.

After that you need to get some sleep. I’ve learned the hard way that everything seems much worse to us (in our lives, not just bunnies) at 3AM. If she’s pooping, it’s a good sign. Let the meds do their work and rest yourself so if you need to take her to the vet at normal morning hours you can. I have a feeling that your treatments are working for her and she’ll show more improvement after not too many more hours.

Well I have stayed up. It is 5:30ish here now. I got 5-10 more poops out of her. I sort of gave her an enema. As my boyfriend so poetically put it, I “scared the cr@p out of her”. While she is still not eating, but her gut seems to be making longer gurgling noises, and her ‘bloat’ is pretty much non-existent. I think I’m just feeling how fat she is now. lol. I have the alarm set for 3 hours from now to check on her.

She is a lot better this morning. She ate all of the greens I had put in there last night, and while she only nibbled on the greens I gave her this morning, she is running around my room like she normally does. Her poops are a touch too small for my liking still, but I have all day to work on that and get her eating more. I am torn between putting her in her cage so she gets bored and eats or letting her run around (which helps move stuff). I suppose she might eat when she needs to poop so I’ll just let her do what she wants for now.

                      LOL @ Scared the crap!

Good to know she’s doing better. I think it’s best to give her both-let her run a bit and if she wants to, she’ll go nibble some. I understand about the stress-When Sunny had statis I was so worried .

I took the greens out and put them in front of her. She has since eaten all of them. She had a large clump of poops, so she is getting the size back. Isn’t it amazing that we could want our rabbits to pop out just a few of those precious little poops? People who aren’t rabbit owners just couldn’t understand that! lol. Thank you all for your well wishes and advice!

Oh whew! Sounds good. I know earlier you stated you sort of gave her a enema….I’m afraid to ask, but what happened there exactly?
But at least she is doing much better and seem on mend.

Rabbits sure are good about keeping us on our toes. Hopefully you are now off yours and getting some good sleep!

I have to know too-how do you give a rabbit an enema? I’ve never heard of that for them before?

Anyways super glad she’s doing well now!

Dana Krempels GI stasis article touches on enemas a bit. Only place I’ve come across it…

How is she now, completely thru it? I hope so, not much fun when they get like this.   Is this the first time this has happened since you’ve had her?  I wonder what triggered it?

Thanks Jersey! I have read that article a million times, and I know I must have just ignored that enema thing – I must have figured I would have to have my vet instruct me. That whole part never stuck in my memory. I just reread her article and found the detailed info about. It does say to have a vet show you how, so I will definitely talk to my vet about it at the next visit.

Do you know..I think that article has been changed or updated. It seems to have more info in it that when I first read it.

Well, I have assisted in giving enemas to kittens before (we bottlefed and they had trouble adjusting to a new diet so quickly). I didn’t remember exactly what we used to give it, but I think it was just a syringe (no needle of course). So I duplicated that. Just warm water as I was paranoid about using anything that could prevent a mass from getting re-moisturized. Now when it was 5 in the morning, holding a rabbit upside down and trying to do this is not easy. I say that I attempted it because just after I had flipped her over and started doing it she started pooping. I don’t know if the medicine was finally working, or if the warm water helped, but she was going to the bathroom again and I was happy. I tried a few more times to give it again, but she just kept going so I gave up. She seemed to be a lot happier then too, as she started exploring the kitchen, not just looking for a place to sit in pain.

Yes Jersey, she is completely through it I think. She is eating, pooping, and even gave my boyfriend a binky today (the traitor!). I don’t know what might have caused it, except she only got half her normal greens the night before because I was low. I made sure that they were extra moist though. She has been locked up more than usual because of Christmas. She used to be locked up a lot more though before I got her, so I don’t think that is what caused it. It’s not like she looses access to food or anything. So it was probably a combination of both those things. I’m just glad it is over!

kytkattin – I just now read in the Dana Krempels article that not only does the enema hydrate at the source which can help, but it also seems to stimulate the muscles there which can get things going so that could have helped! (BUT FOR ANYONE READING THIS, I RECOMMEND YOU HAVE A VET SHOW YOU HOW TO DO THIS if you don’t have any experience- kytkattin had done this before)

Anyway, I am just relieved to hear she’s on her way back to feeling normal again – and hopefully you are getting a good nights rest now.

When giving the enema how little water do you use?  I would think not much.   Also I have no intention of doing this without vet help first.

I could ask Cotton and Ruby’s vet when I take Ruby in for her check up.  Would be nice to know about it.  The proper way to do it.

I don’t feel very comfortable giving out the amount directly in the post,  as I wouldn’t want people reading this to just know bits and pieces without reading up on the whole thing which includes the cautions and advice of seeking vet care – Anyone who just would like to have the info as a resource can check out Dana Krempels article that includes info about it within the article: http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/ileus.html

That article is wonderful, as is this site. I don’t know what I would have done without it (except I probably wouldn’t even know what stasis was!) I honestly don’t even remember the amount of water I used at this point. I was just going on instinct at that hour in the morning. lol. With my mom being a nurse, we have done pretty much everything to some animal or another that needed urgent care, even using a medical stapler to put the neck skin of a chicken back together after a raccoon attack (yes, it lived!). If I didn’t have the experience I have I would have contacted a vet. Even with all of the experience I do have I was tempted to take her into a vet just in case.
I highly recommend that anyone reading this in regards to their own rabbit potentially being in stasis, especially if it is the first time this has happened to a rabbit in their care, to contact a vet! While Eclipse has never had this before, I have dealt with stasis in the past.

As for my sleep schedule, well that isn’t quite in order again, but at least it is winter break.
