Okay so i have a small moral dilemma, as some of you may know, Zoe recently had her babes and well all of them are doing great, they are pretty soon going to leave with their new perspective owners. Well I have a neighbor who lives about 4 or 5 houses away she bough her kids a pair of bunnies from a pet shop and of course they found them cute and cuddly as babies but now they keep them outside in this wire cage allllllll day when i go jogging with my dog i see the bunnies in there looking pretty gloomy, the sun hits them all day and when its cold they have no shelter from the cold. Turns out the pair is male and female and the bunny had babes!!!!! I knew this because (this is the part where im just EXTREMELY MAD about) when i went running with my dog and looked over to the cage to see the buns,( i like stopping and giving them some craisins when i pass by) i saw a bunch of hairless babes on the wire floor!!!!! she had no where to have her babes or no material to make a nest that she just had them on the wire cage floor. I immediately opened the gate to the lady’s home and walked in there, knocked on her door and told her “your bunny had babes and they are gonna die if you dont get them inside ASAP!!!!” the lady walked over the buns cage with me and said, darn i guess will just burry them later. I couldnt believe this!!! I was speechless!!! i told her you cant do that they are still alive and she responded well they are gonna die anyways. so i told her no you need to get a cardboard box, put some hay and the momma will do the rest. But she had none of this supply, so i ran back home got a carboard box (soda case) and put some hay and ran back over there and picked each baby up from the floor and but them in the box, she had 12!!!!! but 2 were dead already i felt like crying!! this happend on monday so i went back today to see how they were doing, i knocked on the lady’s door and asked her and she said she hadnt checked up on them, she was too busy, so we went out to see them and 2 more were dead! the momma wasnt feeding them because she isnt lactating, didnt and doesnt have the appropiate diet to do so! The womans solution for this was to just let them all die. I told her i would take them and see if i could do something for them, i remembered i still had some KRM left over from when i was feeding Wednesday. She said sure take them. So now i have 8 newborns with me, I really cant keep them but i wasnt gonna let some living creatures die a slow death. What do i do? should i go drop them off at an animal shelter or try and see if i can get them past 2 weeks and then drop them off? Right now they are in the boz in zoe’s cage i put some fur that Zoe had pulled out from when she had her babes ( i saved it cuz i thought it would be nice memories of when she became a mommy) and they are all very warm right now and look pretty pink, when they were outside they looked grey. they all ate some KRM so their tummies are no longer sunken in, and zoe keeps on going in there to sniff them she seems a bit confused, lol! but on a serious note what is your guys recommendation, is it possible for them to survive? Oh when zoe went in the box to see them one quickly latched on to her teat, the vet had told me Zoe was no longer lactating but Wednesday still latches now and then so maybe she might have a little bit left, not sure. I was thinking MAYBE just MAYBE Zoe’s milk would come back if they all latch on. Im not sure if this would be healthy or safe for Zoe though, i dont want to put her in any health danger. Guys what do i do, should i just go drop them off at a shelter?

The first thing I would do is call either Animal Control or the ASPCA to report this disgusting woman. Letting a litter of rabbits die because you don’t want to bother taking care of them is animal abuse, no question. She already let four of them die, and the rest would have done the same if you hadn’t stopped her. Also, if she still has a male and female locked up together, it’s going to happen again, and she’ll just let litter after litter of bunnies die outside of her own house. These animals need to be taken away from her as soon as possible.

I’m horrified at this story. I admire you so much for taking on such a responsibility.

Yes, please please report her. That horrid woman doesn’t even deserve to have any pets at all.

Yes I have to agree that you need to report this stupid stupid cruel woman .Poor little babies and poor poor buns to left in her care for this sad story to repeat its self over and over . I truely dont understand people like this what is she thinking!? There is a special place in hell for people liek that .You did the right thing by stepping in where alot of people would just keep jogging and say eh I dont wanna get into that and get my neighbore upset with me.As for adivce on what to do with the babies I have no idea realy other than calling a shelter that deals with buns and get advice or a resuce ? Maybe someone there will help you out and have advice on how to keep them alive .Hugs to you and keep us posted on how they are doing.

Oh I did, i was so mad, first thing i did was call animal control once i got the babies settled. Animal control said they would go check the conditions she had the rabbits in on friday both look malnourished and their feet look really weird probably cuz of the wire cage that they are in ALLLLL day! okay guys so here’s a pic. you really cant see them all cuz they are all on top of eachother, they are 3 or 4 days old. That fur you see is Zoe’s i had saved it from when she had her babes, i took it out when i took out the babies from the tunnel she made outside. I had NEVER seen newborn baby bunnies since Zoe had hers inside that tunnel she made and i wasnt able to take them out until they were about 2 weeks. What’s your guys opinion you think they will make it? They are inside a carboard box (soda case) thats all i had handy, i stuffed it with hay and put them in there. I’ll try to take a better pic tomorrow. THEY HAVE NO FUR!!! poor babies but as you can see they pinked up they looked grey when i got them they were really cold.

Zoe has been a great helper she keeps on going in there and trying to fix the hay, shes a compulsive cleaner, lol! She is so sweet, the babes keep on going in ther and checking them out too, but i think im’a restrict their access dont want the newborns to get sick.

I don’t want to scare you, but I think restricting access is a good idea. I know those babies haven’t been outside for long, but their parents have, and I think there might be a risk of a number of contagious issues, like mites, or even parasites. This woman took horrible care of her bunnies and I’m sure she didn’t get them checked for these kinds of things.

I think Animal Control should also help you get them to a proper rescue shelter, along with the two parent bunnies. Do you know if the true mother is lactating? I don’t think you should undertake the responsibility of these babies, who are in dire straights, just because you saved them from cruel abuse. Zoe has been through a lot in recent months. I would urge you to contact a local rescue, along with animal control, and ask for help to share the responsibility of rehoming them now, rather than later. If some do survive, some health issues may surface and need vet care that you just can’t take on. The woman needs to be pursued by Animal Control, you need some fast back up in case she gets nasty toward you, and a rescue may have a bunny on site that can do the job that Zoe is attempting. Get them to safety where the right supplies are readily available.

Okay you guys so i have my day off from work today so i did alot of running around today. first i went to the SPCA here in my city and took the babes with me, plus Zoe and the her 3 buns. I explained the situation and they immediately send off someone to the lady’s house to check out the conditions, mean while they examined the newborns and they said they were perfectly healthy no mites or parasites. They also did me the favor of examining Zoe and the 3 babes and said they were EXTREMELY healthy and i should not be worried for their health. One babe did have a broken leg and arm im guessing maybe cuz he was hanging from the wire cage floor Anyways they said if Zoe was willing to feed them that it would be great since they at the present moment have no nursing Doe’s. Since they do have an overload of animals they said if I would be willing to foster them that it would be great and they would later find homes for them. They also gave me the number to an organization here in Los Angeles that focus ONLY on rabbits so i will be giving them a call, the SPCA said they would give them a ring ahead of time. Oh and by the way while i was there the man who had gone over to check on the parents had come back and with them in hand!! The man told me that she willingly gave them up, and the momma isnt lactating the vet or vet assistant there said it was due to the lack of proper nutrition. They gave me a case of KRM just in case Zoe wouldnt want to feed them. I wil call the organization before i try and see if Zoe will feed them though, i just gave all of them some KRM, so there tummies are nice and round.Zoe though has been really fixing up the nest all the hay you see up on the side of the box she has put there i dont know how she managed that, plus she has been licking there bottoms which from what i understand helps with them to poop and pee. Im thinking maybe she thinks they are hers???? I dont know? Wednesday, Coke and Mellow just follow her around everywhere, lol its funny to see. I dont know if i can care for 7 babes though( SPCA said they would care for the one that has a broken leg and arm)

Oh Moz… this is going to sound extremely dramatic, but this is such a heroic thing you’re doing.

Did they say if the woman was going to be fined or anything??

Wow! What an incredible rescue story! Thank you for being such a wonderful person and saving these babies, which also lead to saving their parents. I am so happy that all these buns are away from that woman! What a horrible woman she is! Healing and well being vibes for all and especially the wee one with his poor little arm and leg broken.

Also wanted to add that I think Zoe deserves an extra craisen or two for all she is doing to help take care of these babies as well!

Yes, the lady will be fined, I believe its $2500 fine, plus community service. When the man from SPCA went over to the woman’s house a police officer was waiting for him already and was given a ticket and citation for court. I contacted the organization that helps abandon bunnies and 2 ladies actaully came to my house so that i wouldnt have to take the babies out. They were great!!! They brought over a wooden nest box to put the babies but later decided that it would be best to leave them in the box since Zoe had already fixed it up pretty good. While they were here Zoe went in and started fixing up the nest again and actually fed them!!!! The 2 ladies were amazed, they said they would have a Vet check Zoe out to make sure it wont be too much for her since she just had her babes 5 weeks ago. So that seems to put me on ease. I had her spay appointment for next week, but i guess that will have to wait. They took pictures of the babies and said they would start looking for homes for them, so thats GREAT! I cant believe i have 12 rabbits right now in my house, lol!!! My daughter is fascinated by the fact that we have 12 bunnies in the house, she cant stop going into the room and checking up on the newborns. She’s already giving them names. =)

That’s so wonderful!! Sounds like you and Zoe both have stepped up to the plate… and your daughter as well!

Hopefully the fine and community service will make that cruel woman think twice about treating animals with such negligence.

This post definitely changed from tragic to inspiring, all because of you.

                                          Moz,
that’s so wonderful! You did such a great job, all in one day. And I am really pleased with the way the shelter and the animal control and police officers have worked to get justice done. Zoe sounds like she found a job she loves and is just doing it. Professional Mother and Homemaker. It’s a calling. What lucky babies.
I’m also glad they rescued the parents, though it’s so sad that they couldn’t care for the babies due to their own neglect. I think their lives are saved now. You will have a lot of help getting this pair of families rehomed – unless the local shelter folks just decide to do a barn raising and get you a place to just keep 12 bunnies for good.
What’s that on your head? *spies a halo*

I was at VBSPCA, looking at the buns, and the lady informed me that Rosie and Streetbunny were 65% less likely to get adopted… just cuz they’re black! Makes me so angry that people are that shallow. The same is true of REWs, apparently

Baby bunnies are just the cutest thing ever! I’m so glad these guys hung on, and are in your hands now.

Honestly so many people would just ignore and pretend they didn’t see those babies suffering, and never call the SPCA and such b/c they don’t want to get involved.
