        romaine lettuce has suddenly become???

For that matter ALL lettuce. I mean, I get that it is suddenly cold, but Romaine was 3.29 per head at my market – and it is usually no more than 1.29!! Same with Red and green leaf – normaly .99 cents – 2.29 today!

Was there some massive freeze that I was not informed about?

wow, that is a huge jump. Our prices have been the same but the lettuce heads are about half the size they were a few weeks ago. (I do tend to pick up the loose leaves other people pull off and leave there, the produce guy is used to me and just laughs)

Curly parsley is out for us right now, it went from .59 a bunch to over a dollar for a very very small bunch but italian parsley has gone down.

I’ve learned to go on Tuesdays and Friday’s because who ever bunches the parsley has really, really big hands and just 3 bunches will fill the produce bag! Feeding 5 bunnies, it really helps. Especially since Lola and Daisy get mostly greens and hay and just a few pellets.

Yeah, I agree! Lettuce has gone up here in the Bay Area. Last week, lettuce was about a $1.19, but now, it’s $1.99! As a matter of fact, all produce as gone up. Cilantro was 3/99 cents, and now it’s about .89 cents for one bunch. Dill and Basil cost $2.99 a bunch! That’s just crazy!

              I don’t know what’s going on.

I saw that too and wondered if they are also trying to make more money during the holidays too.

Any type of lettuce is insane right now. My poor bunnies are making due with bagged greens that are on sale. Kale and Collard greens, Parsley when I can find it for a decent price. Even the asian markets are great. Prices are the same but it’s all wilty and dried out looking.

I did notice that romaine was $2.99 yesterday – way more expensive than it’s been during the summer. I wish Otto wasn’t so darn picky because I’d buy him whatever was cheapest.

Phew, I am glad it isn’t just here!

I go to the Middle eastern or Indian markets here, as the greens tend to be the freshest, most generous portions and best prices. I did notice cilantro got crazy expensive for a while – 2 bucks a bunch – and looked pretty bad. The Italian parsley has wavered in price, but only about 20 cents or so.. It was the Romaine and other lettuce that knocked me back.

In montreal, it isn’t Thanksgiving tomorrow, so I didn’t think it was holiday pricing. And People here are salad eaters – I’ve never seen a head of romaine more than 1.50. I finally gave up and went and bought a bag of those “romaine hearts” for 2.49 since it was more cost effective.

Right now I buy salad twice a week – Chop it all up and pack it in a paper towel lined plastic bag in the fridge.

                      It consists of:
                      2 Heads of Romaine
                      1 Head of Other Lettuce
                      2 Bunches of Dandelions
                      4 bunches of mint
                      4 bunches of Italian Parsley
                      3 bunches of Cilantro
                      1 bunch of Collards/Chicory

Occasionally I might throw in some spinach, or dill or what ever might be on sale or “new”.

Generally, this cost me about 25 bucks – but it was almost 40 yesterday. Yikes.
(Ps – my rabbits don’t get pellets, so they get lots of salad)

Just got groceries last night; same thing here. Romaine usually gets a bit pricey this time a year but not this pricey. Almost $3 and they are totally pathetic looking and tiny. I needed celery and I had to sort through like 10 bags to find one that looked edible.

I hate this time of year for fruits and veggies. Having 3 rabbits (and being a vegetarian) gets really expensive. Geez, we’re all poor from Christmas shopping, give us a break.

Baleful- You spend $50 a week on veggies??

Sigh. Yeah – Just about. And this is why I buy from my account and not the house account.
During the summer, I can go to Jean Talon and get the veggies for cheap and huge bunches – direct from the farms. But when they close up in October, its back to the market.

Shhh, I don’t tell the Husband about what the veggies cost – I just take care of it – the shopping, the chopping and the mixing. With the towel lined plastic bags, the salad is lasting about 5days – so I don’t exactly buy 2 full salads a “week”

Jackson is a Crazy eater. He is double the size of Coco and like a bottomless pit. Same with Hay. I am whipping through bags of hay because he is a machine. I may chat with one of the local horse farms and see if I can’t get a break for a partial bale. “Local” is relative in a city, of course.

Its clear that Jackson was a Very young bun when he was rescued – Sexually mature, but Young. He wasn’t done growing. He stretches out to 3 times the size of Coco when he chillaxes now.

It almost makes me want to re-intro pellets to help “fill them up” a bit. But Coco gets over cecal bum as soon as she gets more than a tablespoon of pellets.

Thank goodness I can come here and talk about my rabbits diet and digestive systems! No one else gets it, at all!

wow, your ‘salad’ mix sounds so much more interesting than mine. I’ve been trying to introduce different veggies into their green/red lettuce-cilantro-parsely-carrot slivers-celery-curley kale-mustard greens(if theyhave to) menu but they really resist.

Lola and Hershey won’t touch Romaine lettuce, neither will the 2 piggies and they can raise a racket when that’s what they get.

Sometimes I splurge and buy a bunch of watercress, but outside of that they won’t touch the other stuff on my list.

I like your idea of a papertowel lined bag, will have to try it. I’ve gone through different storage bins and boxes and the thing that works best for us is just a big dishpan tub with paper towels in the bottom and I cover it with a dampened dishtowel. It will stay fresh and green all week if I keep the towel moist.

The paper towel at the bottom of the Giant Zip Loc bag ( Which is actually what it really is) seems to keep the greens from getting silmey – When its empty, I can wipe it down – let it dry and re-use. They come three to a box, so it seemed the best choice for the massive amount of vegetables I am attempting to store!

I haven’t seen any price jumps lately…in fact, when I went to a store out-of-town the other day, I got an amazing deal on cilantro – .30 cents for 3 bunches! My Dad is picking up lettuce tonight; I’ll ask him to check the price.

Maybe the price jumps are because veggies can’t be grown locally much (cold temps) and need to be shipped further?

I’ve noticed this! Though as long as it’s not more than $2.00 I’m good. Plus I can go get some parsley from the garden. I get my greens from either Costco or Walmart, and Costco always has the same stuff, but Walmart doesn’t. Like last week they only had Kale, the week before that only Mustard Greens. Sometimes neither of those. So then the buns are stuck with romaine and parsley. Now I’m going to go check if they can have chives…

Romaine lettuce at my local supermarket today was $1.69… 20 cents more than normal. :/

Maybe the Veggies growers have noticed the increasing popularity of House rabbits and decided to make their move ?

Watch for HAY going up big time. It was a bad year all around and those giant hay bales go for around 35$ each (a few thousand lbs of hay) are now 120$ a bale (so I’ve heard)

And YES I seriously noticed. I fed veggies from my garden and my moms garden all summer so I was spoiled. With Chuck being sick I’m spending around forty dollars every three days (he and Noot are getting almost all veggies-and they are eating a ton).

It was 5$ for three small heads of romaine. 2$ for a regular head. Parsley and Cilantro are up 20c a bunch (they were 50c now 70c) -totally noticed an increase
AND I’m trying to eat more veggies too so this is just breaking the bank

Produce is out of control! I was in the market this evening and still can’t believe how much lettuce, cilantro and parsley costs! Over the summer, I could buy produce really cheap. My buns love their cilantro, italian parsley, mint, romaine lettuce and dandalion leaves. I guess I’m gonna have to bite the bullet and buy it. I can’t bear the thought of them not having their veggies.
