well i bought my bun a harness last sunday. and i am trying to let him get used to the feeling. so every single day i put the harness on him so i can follow him. and i want him to kind of follow me when he gets used to it. so how long should it take for him to do that? and do i need to take any steps to do it?
Aawww that so cute! I’ve never tried a harness on my buns … think they would have a fit! Its great you got the harness on him in the first place.
I would probably just let him do his thing … Does he seem comfortable in the harness? Just see how he goes and let him be the leader.
Sprinkles follows me around in the garden. I have a fully fenced yard so I let her roam around at her leisure, but she will let me know when she has had enough as she will scratch at the flyscreen door. She generally likes to lie in the garden bed amongst the plants. I just manage to see a bit of a black and white thing in the bed sticking up!
Good luck with the harness training … sounds like fun.
bunnies are pretty strong willed creatures and many have no inclination at all to walk on a leash. none of my rabbits have ever deigned to walk on a leash, but i know some buns who love it.
so, I have no personal experience to share – but I did find an article on bunny agility that includes a section on leash training. please let us know how it goes!

Since Cooper is just so happy and friendly I thought he would be fun to attempt going outside to the park with. The girls wouldnt be interested. I think Cooper may have been outside before because if he sees you heading for the door he runs and catches up hoping to go out. My girls run the opposite direction.
I just bought him a harness last week and it was so cute because when I would try and put it on him he would lay down flat and put his chin on the ground so it wouldnt go on. lol We did finally get it on and he ran around the house with it. So we will try this again a few more times before we attempt to go outside. We will probably take him to my inlaws house since they live out in the country and they have a nice big yard-they even have wild buns!
That rope harness looks lethal … there is no way I’d use that specific one on a buuny. Looks like the rope is digging into the bunny like it is strangling him.
oh. . . ok
Your bun Cookie has massive ears …don’t think I seen a rabbit with such huge sticky up ears … all the better for earing you with my dear LOL.
lol.
I tried Teddy with harness but he was havin none of it… it took 2 of us to try and attempt it.. first time he grabbed it off me and threw it across the room then next time i held him so that he would only bite me whilst my friend tried to put it on him and im pretty sure he does not have front paws.. they are very much hands lol.. he was throwing them around like arms and growling.. so we eventually just kept placing it on his back to get used to the feel and he just shook it off and jumped in his toilet box til he thought we would stop lol! guess il give my harness away to my friend as she was going do try one out on hers as Teddy is adament that it is NOT going on him lol!
lol!! Cookie doesn’t like the harness that much. But i’ve been doing it since last sunday. so he’s pretty used to it.
funny, my brother had just bought my bf a harness for his bun (but i use it for mine too) they look so cute in it. he had gotten the vest one. they didnt seem so much bothered by it when i put it on but my brothers said that they had a problem putting it on them. (they love their mommy better =P) at first they were not used to it so they would try to hop really really fast under the futon but as soon as they feel a little pressure they would stop. the think i like best is that the leash part is elastic so it puts lots of ease on them and doesnt choke them. =) and u can take off the leash and let them wear it as a vest. emo seemed to like the vest. once it was on, she didnt want to take it off. =P she looked too cute. i have pictures. (she still hates the flash so she looks really scared. kinda funny) ill post them on my myspace soon. =P
ok!! hurry!!!!! i want to see the pics!!
my bun hated the harness.. . until we took her outside in it.. now she knows if the harness is going on, she gets to go outside.. so now she doesn’t even fuss when we put it on!!!
that’s so cute!
Jessica HATED the harness! Here’s a disturbing story….
On occasion the hubby and I bring one of our cats outside to enjoy a sunny day when we are out in the yard. We always harness the cats, b/c I don’t want to worry about one running off. We never take out more than one cat at a time. Anyway, Wolfy (our youngest & most spry) was out in the garden w/ us as we were doing our yard work. We live in a Philly twin, so our postage stamp yard directly abuts both next door neighbors. The rear of the yard is a stone retaining wall. Atop the wall is the next street, an overgrown alley. Our next door neighbors wall has partially fallen down. W/ all the overgrowth (Eastern Ivy)…that passage has become the neighborhood animal super hwy. We’ve even been in the yard when animal families stroll in to make use of this prime highway bypass. These animals don’t care if humans are present. We’ve had opossum and raccoon FAMILIES use this as their personal roadway.
Anyway…a bird flew by and Wolfy wrangled out of his figure eight harness and was off to the super hwy. My husband ran out to the front yard to start running around the block. Its only a super hwy for animals, not humans, and I grabbed the tippy hair on Wolfy’s tail. I barely was able to get an ample grasp on him. I could freak thinking about Wolfy running off and something happening to him. He hasn’t gone out since! Now only our 20 lb Tom is allowed to go out in the garden…he’s just to fat to be spry!
wow!!! that was close.

FYI for anyone who has raccoons that venture about the yard. I just recently learned a few weeks ago that raccoons can carry a deadly disease to rabbits. It affect their nervous system and there is no cure. I found this out when I took Bailey in for the weakness of her back legs, and the vet asked me if I had raccoons that ventured into the yard and if I let Bailey outside. She then told me the name (which for the life of me I cannot remember the name – will ask on Monday, when I return) which can also display symptoms much like e.cuniculi, but the disease is more deadly and it can act quickly. It is passed via urine and feces that is left on plants, lawn etc. Doesn’t mean every raccoon is infected, but how are we to know if a raccoon is infected or not, so we just have to be careful.
and actually, I’m not sure what being careful means…as I do want my bunnies to enjoy outside when supervised, but I will be looking for ways they can play out in the fresh air with minimal danger. Right now, I haven’t let them out because they get fleas! It’s crazy flea season around here.
Once I get the name of the disease, I will be looking into the percentages of raccoons that have it and what parts of the country/world may have more problems with it.
UPDATE: Okay, Here’s the name and more information:
here’s the info on it.
http://www.cdc.gov/Ncidod/dpd/parasites/baylisascaris/factsht_baylisascaris.htm http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/eid/vol8no4/01-0273.htm
The article above does discuss it regarding human infection but what I’ve read and been told by the vet was that children are more susceptible. (they say this because not necessariliy because of the immune system, but because they are more likely to get down on the ground, hands and mouth contact – but even adults can get it) So obviously that’s scary!! Our pets are also very vulnerable when it comes to surviving it. The House Rabbit Society says it infests 68 to 82% of some raccoon populations.
So though I don’t think anyone should freak and panic about it, it’s something to be aware of.
wow. another reason why i don’t wan to take Cookie outside.
I am trying to imagine my Juli on a harness, its pretty funny, I have NO DOUBT that she would know exactly which way I want her to go, and then hop in precisely the opposite direction! And Kramer, he’s such a baby about things, he flies into a corner and hides when I turn the WATER on, if he was outdoors he’d probably be shaking in his little bunny harness!
oh, i got the picture of emo in her harness. =P its on my my-space though… once i get the chance ill post it here. =)
i have a harness for domino its in the H style its red and he loves it my naibours kids walk him around and around the garden on a extendable lead so when hes had enought he justs hops back into the house i live in the uk so no racoons here
hes wearing his harness in the pic

lilmizz: first you have to click on "Add Reply" you can’t do it in the text box (quick reply) at the bottom of the page.. then in the bar above the text box in add reply, there is a small yellow box with a mountain and a sun, that is the add images button (in the pic above it is circled in red). Click on it and a box will pop up telling you to put in the URL (I put two red dots next to where the URL of your pic goes) of the photo (you must be hosting the photo somewhere first, I use photobucket.com and I think its really nice – check it out, and if you have any problems send a message to me!) then the picture will pop up in the preview box (where all the nonsense words are – just ignore them they stay even after your picture is in the box) and you can adjust the size using the width and height boxes to the left of the preview box (this is in the red square) .. when you do this keep the lock next to the height and width boxes locked this way your sizing is always proportional.. put in the top number and it will fix the bottom number to match.. I usually use 400×300 oor 300x2somthing.. hope this helps!
sorry its hard to see the letters in the pic i used for demonstration.. but its sized down a bit too much from what was originally on my screen!
oh my pic wont apear just a box with a red x its not workin =(
