‘llo all, it’s my first post here, so I thought I’d start out with something happy.

I went into Petco two weeks back, as I was thinking of getting a pet rat, and saw an empty (pine shavings covered!) cage that had a note on it that offered a bunny for adoption. Now, I’m a sucker for adopted animals: I love knowing I’ve helped out. So, when I came back the next day to finalize my choice, I thought I’d ask about the bunny (he was gone) and see if he’d gone to a good home. Now, that bunny had, but just that morning, the store had gotten another rabbit up for adoption. Apparently, a couple of kids saw a mini-van drive up and toss (!) a rabbit into a dumpster; they climbed in and got the poor thing out. Now, the staff at the PetCo checked him out, and he’s fine: a near completely black two year old male, unfixed, who was absolutely terrified. Again, I’m a sucker for animals, and I knew that, as he’d have to be fixed and he’d require a bit of patience after the whole throwing thing, that he’d not be likely to be adopted.

So, now I have a bunny. I’ve got to say, it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. Heathcliff, as I’ve named him (I’m an English major, what can I say?), has a great personality. He already knows his name, and is nearly completely litter trained. He doesn’t nip, no longer really startles at the inevitable sharp noises in an apartment, and tolerates being picked up. Though he loathes my best (male) friend, he gets along tolerably with my fiance. He’s getting an appointment to be fixed with my next paycheck, even though he’s not given us any trouble with marking. He loves to play chase, does the most ridiculously cute happy bunny dance, and has very defined food preferences. Honestly, I couldn’t be happier. I’ve dealt with abused cats before, and I know that sometimes, you just have resign yourself to knowing that you’ll never be completely accepted, that the damage is occasionally too great. I knew that, as prey animals, rabbits are fairly skittish, and I wasn’t expecting to be warmed up to–particularly after his experience! But, he’s so cute and fuzzy and as affectionate as can be. He’s not at all difficult to clean up after, and rabbit-proofing the apartment was no big deal at all.

Anyway, I’ve rambled on, but I wanted to add some happiness to the boards, and I’ve been wanting to share that with someone since I got Heathcliff.

I’m glad you both found each other. How sad that such a wonderful bunny was deemed “dumpster worthy”. I don’t understand how anyone can have such a cruel, black heart.

Can’t wait to see some pics!

I think it was hardcore fate. My parents had just put down my cat for no discernable reason; seems like they were just tired of taking care of him. I was heartbroken! But Heath is a great companion, and it’s ridiculously entertaining to just watch him roam around the house. It’s pretty great.

I don’t have any really GOOD pictures of him yet, because he seems to be a bit photo shy. Hence, the one picture I have, he’s glaring at me.

                    bunny!Heath!

Dunno if you can really see it, but he’s almost entirely black. He’s got dark, dark, tan splotches on his hind legs, tiny white patches on his back, and his feet are covered in tan fur. For the most part, though, he’s black. I have a ridiculously amount of cardboard boxes that he’s put to good use as a play area: he quite loves climbing on him, and the occasional nibble.

I am a HUGE fan of Emily Bronte…so I LOVE the name! ^^ He definitely looks like a Heathcliff while he’s giving you that stink eye, eh?
He’ll warm up, how could he not with such a caring person to be his bunny parent? ^^ Congratulations to the both of you are in order, and I agree it’s great that some kids rescued him from the dumpster. All hope is not lost for the world if there are still folks like that about.

Thumbs down to the slimeball who abandoned him! From the description you provided, who on earth could resist such a cutie?

Welcome to BinkyBunny! *noserubs for Heathcliff and hugs for you!*

Welcome – I’m so happy you rescued Heathcliff – what awful people to just dump him in the dumpster – it sounds like you and he were meant for each other. He’s a beauty.

He’s beautiful. I can see a tiny bit of tan on the bottoms of his feet in your photo.

That’s a great story and I am really glad to hear both the boys and you were right there to save him. He sounds like he is very, very happy with you (he’s doing binkies already!) and it’s mutual.

(and if you ever decide he needs a companion, you have to get a girl named Cathy.)

I’m so glad people get the name. It’s perfect for him; he’s got such a personality. My fiance is NOT used to dealing with pets, and the first night Heath was at his apartment, my fiance PANICKED. Heath ran circles around him—literally. Then, the next morning, Heath hopped up on the bed and was being all snuggly….and then peed on my fiance’s head! I found it absolutely hilarious. They’re getting used to each other now, though, and one of the bedrooms has been set up so Heath can run around there all day while we’re at work/at classes. He loves it. The other day, I did a binky at him and he binky’d back: it was pretty adorable.

I think I found a place to get him fixed, and the boy and I have decided to get him a companion, if possible. I’m thinkin’ either a boy named Rochester or a girl named Cathy. I’m an English major whose specialty is Victorian Lit, so we’ll have quite a few interestingly named animals, I’m sure. My goal in life, I’m pretty sure, is to get a Mastiff and name it Watson. The only other thing I could think of naming him was Guiness, but the colors are arranged wrong!

Scarlet_Rose, Heath is totally safe from the oscillations of my parents. When I told them my fiance and I got a rabbit, she said that she used to have rabbits, and she just got them pellets and grass, and why did I bother getting him neutered, didn’t I want baby bunnies? Sigh.

*Please note the demonic looking red eye, which I didn’t edit out because it fits him, hehe.

he is precious.  he looks very relaxed in that last pic, you’re doing a great job!  i will say that male-female bonds are generally easier than male-male… but you have a ways to go before you need to worry about that anyways.  congrats on the new addition!  (and i’m sorry about your cat…)

Welcome to BinkyBunny!  Your boy looks a lot like my boy DJ, and he gets the same demon half red/half yellow eyes in flash photos as Heathcliff.  The running around the feet and spraying with pee are classic male mating behavior for bunnies, this should lessen once he is neutered.

You’d have to start a bunny farm to capture all the good names.
What about Steerforth or Mr. Micawber? (Or a pair: James and Joyce)

I love your dueling binkies. He sounds adorable.
