We’ve been trying to bond Nutmeg and Sage for 3 weeks now. At first it was a fight with fur everywhere. Then it was Nutmeg running away from Sage all over the living room. She doesn’t like to adventure outside of living room. She would also run back into her cage. Well we took a week break since Sage was sick and hurt foot. Also went out of town. Anyways, we let them both out last night and Nutmeg didn’t run away from him! They both bowed their heads together and then finally Nutmeg started grooming him I about teared up. It was so sweet to see it. Only time she did run from him was when he went near her butt to sniff. I’m hoping it stays this way. Even after Sage is old enough to get fixed.

          Is Nutmeg already spayed?

We are not sure if she is or not. Previous owners had her for 2 years. She is a really laid back bunny. Even when she is out she likes to just lays around and wants to be petted.

You should assume she is not altered and you should not put any unaltered rabbits together. Both need to be altered before you make any introductions.

If you are not sure if she is spayed, do not put them together as they could mate and you do not want any pregnancies. Take them both to a vet, and have the vet check to see if Nutmeg is fixed (likely not) and schedule both their neuters. Wait atleast one month after both neuterings before attempting any introductions.

The reason I’m not sure she is fixed is cause she doesn’t act like the other 3 bunny’s we have had. She doesn’t go around rubbing her chin on everything, doesn’t go around peeing or pooping in front of their cages.

I plan on getting them fixed, but my husband wants them to mate. I don’t agree with it since I know their not the same breed.

I can think of many more reasons to not mate your rabbits including the age of your female and the cost of care and finding homes, etc…

Besides the subject of intentional breeding is prohibited on our forum.

                    Have your husband read this:

                    http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/breeding.html

I think you need to get your female spayed as soon as possible for her health.

Even a vet can find it difficult to be certain she is spayed, but that’s the only real way to know. Behavior varies too much.

To reiterate what Sarita said, if your husband ends up mating her with another rabbit, that is considered intentional breeding and I’m afraid we don’t allow posts about that at all. We support you in your desire to speuter to prevent an unwanted litter, but separating them is really the only way prior to speutering them.
