HairBuster Alternative?

 So, I was looking at the HairBuster and realized it looks like a horse mane comb with something woven through the tines.  It kind of looks like its a produce rubber band, but I don’t have one so I don’t know.  I’d really like to try to make it at home if I can, since I have the horse comb but never use it!  If someone who has one can explain what that stuff is to me, I’d be really appreciative!

They’re little individual rubber tubes fitted on each tyne.
Frankly, with a short haired rabbit I have never been sure what it’s for, or how it helps. But I do know that it’s the best comb for getting shedding fur removed. I don’t see why you can’t just use the horse comb as is. The thing to bear in mind is not to pull hard so hair that is about to come out but hasn’t has a chance to loosen free on its own. Don’t pull too hard. Also, the hairbuster comb works best if you comb with it slightly at an angle to the bunny’s back, (not straight into the back like you would if you were stabbing with it) and combing from front to back in the direction of the fur growth. Sammy likes it if I rub her face with one hand and comb with the other. But she doesn’t like it being used on her rump for some reason, which she lets me know by running away, grunting, foot flicking, swearing, giving me the….you get the idea.
Try the horse comb, just gently.

The rubber is to catch the fur and pull it out. (if you’ve ever used a real rubber band for a ponytail in a pinch, well you know it works!) it’s a great comb for shedding; but horse combs have been around for ages and work (shedding blade/sweat scraper is sold as an expensive dog brush lol) so I would assume it would be fine to use, as RP said-very gently

Yep, that rubber thing yanks the hair right out. The only thing that will actually gather Leopold’s silky fur.

He’s not shedding or anything at the moment but I wanted to be prepared. Maybe I’ll try putting on a rubber band from his bok choy or something. We shall see!

There is only a small part of the hairbuster tines that are exposed- so it would need to be threaded/stay close to the ends. And if the tines are too far apart then it won’t groom properly. You can try it- but I love the HairBuster and have an extra set aside even. A great invention and worth the price.
