I was wondering if anyone uses hairball rememdy for their long haired rabbits.  Someone at work mentioned it to me.  If so do you just buy it at a pet store and how do you give it to them?  I know I stick it in some tuna for my cat but how would you give it to a rabbit?  Thanks

It’s called Petromalt. The cat version is the same as the rabbit version as long as the flavor you buy is malt. I use it once in a while by putting the amount directed on the back on a carrot once every week or every other week, the bunnies love it so they just lick it off. It’s not necessary as long as they eat a lot of hay but it can be used as a safety measure, especially during molting.

The best thing is hay and activity. Really the petromalt is not needed a preventative – it’s a bit old fashioned thinking. Hay is the absolute best thing to keep your rabbits gut moving. Rabbits don’t get hairballs, the blockages happen when their gut slows down and that is what hay is for.

I only use the Petromalt, about 1/2 inch on a finger, if I see a “string of pearls” poos during her shedding season. It’s not recommended here, but used to be by vets years ago. It’s definitely not preventative, but can be effective in a low dose once if you see a problem. However, don’t continue to use it if the problem doesn’t clear up immediately and the poos go back to normal. Then stop using it (it can actually help clump a problem more serious in the digestive tract) and see a vet.
Sammy loves the malt taste, the kind for cats, but watch out for the fish flavored. She licks it off my finger, and usually has a normal poo within hours.

For your long haired rabbit hay is best, lots of water, and combing or brushing daily.

Ah! Oh no, the humane society I got the bunnies from totally pushes the stuff. They make it sound like it’s a miracle “medicine”. Definitely will talk to them about this when I go for my shift.

yeah, that stuff is useless for bunnies.

I tried it years ago, but i don’t know that it did anything. If anybunny would need it, it would be Rupert (shedding maniac) and Kahlua (three pounds of fur) but they don’t need it since they eat so much hay That’s all they really need
