Just got home from vacation for a week and came home to Dexter’s back having a very thin layer of fur. Delilah has been nipping at him for a while and pulling tufts out when she gets annoyed with him, but it has never been this bad before.  Is there anything I can do, I know it sounds stupid and weird but like a ‘shirt’ to cover him and let his hair grow out? She will come near him and he will just run, assuming he is going to get nipped. He doesnt mind being nipped at he just goes about his business but I feel terrible for him. I just dont want him to be bald, he’s a mini rex and he is down to just little fuzz in some patches. I REALLY dont want to separate them considering we just went through the whole bonding, and up until now I would only find a tuft . What a welcome home…I’m so confused and need some advice…

It could be him just shedding. Others have mentioned a short velvet-like coat in patches where fur has shed. Can you pull away tufts yourself? If it is this, maybe Delilah is removing it while grooming him.

If you can identify it is being pulled out, a car ride might help them rebond a bit.

I agree, it could be shedding that she’s getting off of him. Brush him a bit and see if it’s coming off, or wet your hands and smooth him to see if it sticks to your hands.

Otherwise, it may mean a few steps back in the bonding process.

He wa shedding a little more than usual before we left but I was never able to pull tufts out just little stray hairs. He is still kind of new to us so it maybe I’m just not used to the mini rex ways I think I may do a car ride with Delilah and Dexter too, she still lunges at him a bit but he doesnt mind it and he just hops away, maybe they just need some one on one time…

When my mini rex Lint sheds I can pick out clusters of fur and he will have a thin-looking coat. You can tell though if this is it as Dexter’s new coat should already be visible and you should be able to feel the new tips coming through very velvety. Can you post a close-up photo?

This was Lint’s when it began.

How was your vacatio (how rude of me — I should have asked that first!)
Deirdra still gets little pinch-nips from Lint, too. When she is in his way, when he is hungry, fristrated or whatever. I think she always will but she doesn’t care. I don’t think it is necessarily a bad thing, unless Delilah is the one plucking Dexter. Did the people watching them for you say that she did?

It was good, visited the in-laws and with my grandma and aunt and cousin. It was nice to go, but I’m glad to be back home. The bunnies hated us when we got back, but are almost back to normal. I think I may have over reacted to the fur, I am just not used to seeing how a rex sheds! I know Delilah will get a tuft sometimes, but not like this, he has a strip of little fuzzy hairs down his neck and I highly doubt that Delilah was on top of him pulling his hair out, it was just in a weird spot and theres too much of it. The lady that came and watched them called me one day and was like ‘Dexter has a missing patch of fur, and I just wanted to make sure this is normal?’ its kind of hard to see in this picture.

                      that’s a rex molt!
Lint started molting when I bonded him with Mops and I thought Mops or the stress bonding was the reason, too.

                          I like the word “rexy”.
Mac, what happened with the art? you know Delilah’s portrait?

I know that’s what you had to do naturallly. But I wanted to know if the portrait is finished or if Delilah is still floating.
