Hey everyone. So Smokey passed away on Monday and since then, Oreo has been pulling his hair out and keeping it in his litterbox, very similar to what female rabbits do when they are pregnant. He has never done this before. I have also never had a rabbit or animal do this before, so this is completely new territory for me.
Oreo is a very happy, active, social bunny. He is about 12lb (french/mini lop combo) and has NO concept of his size lol. This is why I am so confused because he is such a happy bun.
This is also the second rabbit Oreo has known that has passed away, but he was not bonded to Smokey and they lived in separate living spaces, albeit next to one another. Everything he did annoyed her, but he did always want to be friends with her. Before Butterscotch passed away, Oreo was actually cuddling next to him when I found him after work. For about a week Oreo seemed sad, and would sit in the spot Butterscotch last was and kind of zone out. But we gave him lots of love and he was okay after about a week. But he never once pulled his own hair out.
It’s just very bizarre. There is no bleeding or anything. He is actually pulling it from his tail, which I only know because half his tail hair is missing. But he doesn’t do it around anyone else, just when no one is around. Initially I thought he had gotten ahold of a blanket and torn it apart (he is good at destroying things), but when I looked closer, I realized it was hair.
What can I do? Has anyone experienced this before? Is poor Oreo so distraught now that 2 bunnies within a year have passed away? I don’t know what to do and my heart hurts for him.
