Hello all, we are adopting an almost one year old bun next weekend. We have some time to get his space ready but I’d like to get his main cage ordered so it arrives on time.

We have a spare room next to our kitchen which we will use for his space, the room appximaely 8×12 ft

Buns looks to be a Lionhead though I don’t know for sure, but I want to have something big enough for him. Most likely he will be in it during the day until I get home from work at 330 pm and then will be able to have a larger area to roam.

I like the hutches that have the play areas on the bottoms there seem to be a lot of options.

One question I have is should I be opting for a flat bottom as opposed to the wire mesh? And if so, what do I line it with? Our last bunny we took in was older and spent his life with the paper bedding so we used that. If there is a better alternative I’m definitely open to that.

If anyone has any suggestions it’s greatly appreciated. Thanks!

That room size sounds amazing, and I used to have a lion head! Would you be able to purchase a dog pen instead? They are way cheaper and very sturdy and offer more run around space than a hutch does.you can lay down fleece, if it’s carpet, you may want to lay a plastic shower curtain liner ontop of the carpet with fleece to protect the carpet.

If you do go with a hutch, flat bottom is preferred and you can line it with plastic drawer liner so the wood won’t get pee soaked in it, then you can lay fleece on it and then put alitter box with paper or wood pellets in there with hay so it’s easier to litter train him. .if he is already neutered, then you shouldn’t have to worry so much about a dirty, pee sprayed hutch to clean, same with the pen.

We could possibly do that. I suppose I could get an area rug for the floor with blankets for him. The floor is linoleum so I doubt he would like it much. Our last bun was terrified of any hard flooring surfaces.

A rug would be great but he might pee on it until he is litter trained so it might be a pain to clean it regularly. Yeah buns don’t like slippery floors. Hope you can get a good house for him!
