Is it normal for bunnies to gulp when drinking? When Dexter drinks out of the bottle he gulps when he swallows and he makes a noise when he does it too. I was sitting on the couch probably 3 feet away from him and I heard it so its pretty loud, and it sacred me! I’ve heard him do it more than once and only he does it?!

Well, I don’t know how much help I’ll really be… for my sanity, Leroy doesn’t use a water bottle. His cage is in my bedroom, and at night, he stays in there. If he had a water bottle, I’d probably go crazy from the noise of the little ball and from being woken up all the time, lol. Anyway, that being said, I know when Leroy drinks, he drinks a ton all at once, and then none at all for a few hours – it concerns me, really, but I guess he knows what he wants, since he has access to water all the time. And when he drinks, he makes the cutest little smacking sound with his lips. =) Anyway, I don’t really know but just a thought, maybe Dexter is making that gulping noise because he’s trying to get more water from the bottle and instead swallowing air?

He drinks alot, in sittings though. He won’t drink for a while then all of a sudden he’s sitting at the water bottle and he stays there for a good 5 minutes!

haha yeah, sounds just like Leroy! I read somewhere that that’s typical of rabbits to drink a lot all at once and then none for a while, but now I can’t find where I read it, so.. * shrug *

*raises hand* Pip always makes a swallowing noise at her sippy bottle. Mimzy sometimes, Fiver never (but he’s smaller so I figure I just can’t hear it.)
It is a bit weird. 0_o

One of my boys, Davey, when he drinks I always say he being dainty! He scoops his head under the bottle and like pushes the ball in with his top teeth, doesnt even make the little ball move, and he just sips it out, its so funny to watch! I heard Delilah gulp too today a few times, it surprises me how loud of noises their little throats can make! I have given them a bowl before, but it always just gets spilled.

On a recent camping trip I noticed that Pepper makes little mmm mmm gulping noises when she drinks.  I’d never had my head that close to her while she was drinking, but I had her in a night-cage in my tent next to my pillow.

Not to worry. Spockie gulped with very audible noise for 8 years. He was fine otherwise, so I just got used to it. Crock dish, water bottle – it didn’t matter.

I got to the point where I’d hear him gulping and think “oh good, he’s having a nice big drink.”

The rabbit cages are also in my bedrooms and the bottles do drive me nuts. I understand your thinking Barbie. I’m considering just getting them both a water crock that they can’t knock over. I had problems with that before because sometimes they would poo in the water. Very gross. Jen’s rabbit is a large female rabbit so we are expecting her to get a dewlap soon so I’m not sure that a water bowl would be too good for that. Sir thumps always drinks from the dogs water bowl anyway…

Yeah, I have a heavy water crock, but it’s on the opposite side of his cage from his litter box, so I haven’t had any issues with him pooping in it. I rinse it out and refill it a couple times a day, just to make sure it’s clean =)

We have a bunny, Grace Papou, that my husband says “sounds like a marathon runner who just crossed the finish line and is gulping down Gatorade.”
