When we first started looking at homes-I was bugging dave to get a dog. We’re both animal lovers and living in an apartment you just can’t have one. He finally started looking at dogs and agreed we could get one. (The bunnies will have their own bedroom, plus a floored and covered play place in the garden out back,-we plan to have them out supervised with the dog if he/she behaves-or out when the dog is outside or in another room dependings).
We have a height restriction on dogs in the park-18 inches at the shoulder or less. That severely limits us as most shelter dogs are big (We both LOVE big dogs but any dog is great right?) -we checked all the shelters from Vancouver to Winnipeg and didn’t find any suitable small dogs (Dave’s stipulations-given that I always get the pets and the dog is going to be his choice-are “up” ears and light coloring
)-so we started breed researching and decided on Shiba Inu’s -they are like miniture Ikita’s and very cute-although harder to train and stubborn they looked like the dog for us.
We found a fantastic breeder and went to meet her and the dogs today. She shows, keeps ten generation pedigrees, does health testing on her dogs before breeding and on the pups-and keeps them all in her home-not in tiny kennels. We fell in love with Sumo, a one year old boy with a great personality. But Sumo was 1800$-we had planned to spend up to 1000$ on a dog if we had to from a breeder but there’s just no way we could jusify spending that kind of money on a pedigreed dog ![]()
So we went back to searching shelters with the realization that it may take a very long time before we find a little dog who needs a home-but I was more pleased to be looking at shelters. She was a great breeder-took great care of her animals and screens homes-but I’d just rather adopt.
And so we found PETEY!!! He’s only five hours away, we’ve been approved ALREADY and one of their volunteers brought his rabbit in tonight to play with Petey and see how he did!! Petey did great, was a little shy of the bunny and very submissive. They are going to hold him for us for a boarding fee-and we go pick him up on May 2 (Once we’re all settled in our home!) Petey is only 15 inches high, he’s gorgeous IMHO and he’s two years old-the videos they have him show a gentle happy playful dog-needless to say I’m head over heels.
Meet Petey our new puppy!!!

He looks a bit scared of the bunny LOL
So you did the same thing Scooter and I did huh? Although we decided that since we were so close to the end of our lease, and we were in a house, we just brought the dog home. What’s really funny is that before we started looking, back when Scooter promised me we’d get a dog when we got a house, I thought I wanted something small – probably a cocker spaniel. Then suddenly I started looking at big dog – oh look it’s a mastiff puppy, wow she’s going to be big when she’s grown…awwww… And we ended up with Dakota. Who still thinks she’s a lap dog.
Petey looks so cute! And yes he does look a little scare of the bunny!! Don’t worry, he’ll come around.

Congrats K&K he looks so adorable.
Congrats!!! He is very cute!
K&K, I think you’d love Dave even more if he had 4 legs instead of 2! LOL
Petey is lovely. Is he full grown in his pictures? (height-wise, not girth.) I immediately thought of Shelties since they’re very trainable and gentle but short, but am quite limited in my knowledge of Goggies.
That bunny is obviously a Sammykins cousin. Of course he’s scared. My Sammy can keep anyone in line when she’s in a bad mood. grrrr. Ferocious. If he can get along with an English Spot, he’ll find yours downright mellow.
So maybe there’ll be a second trailer for sale next to your new home that you can buy for you and Dave. You’ll need a place to stay.
Oh he’s cute. And you’ve given me hope since I originally wanted a dog, but we somehow ended up with rabbits. Maybe there will be a dog in our future… hmmmm…. Good luck and keep us posted. He’s a very good looking pup.
Awesome! Or to use your own words “SWEET!” He looks ideal – he doesn’t have that small dog look. I also thought of shelties like Pam. I think that’s what Lion-Lop has. I can’t help but laugh…now that you guys don’t have the limitations of the apartment, sky’s the limit! So funny that he’s already been bun trialed too!
Congrats!! He’s adorable!

LOL Pam!! I was filling out the adoption application and it asked where he would sleep at night…I’m like “DUH our bed!!!!”
He’s a Corgi cross-and at first I’m like he looks nothing like a Corgi but he does actually. He’s full grown, two years old and only 15″ at the shoulder which is perfect. These are videos they posted of him

YOU HAVEN’T EVEN MOVED IN YET AND YOU ARE ALREADY LINING UP ADDITIONAL PETS?!!?
Oh man… Dave is in trouble. ;o)
I’m glad you’re adopting. Regardless of how “great” a breeder might be, I always think shelters are the best route. Especially since you guys don’t want an itty bitty puppy, much better to adopt an adult dog… For $1800 the dog better know how to use it’s own pooper scooper! If you were already prepared to spend 1000 dollars, after the adoption fee you could also give a nice donation to the shelter you adopt from. Just an idea…
Oh we are going to donate
I thought it was amazing that within hours they got ahold of a volunteer to bring in a rabbit to check Petey’s reaction for us without even asking-amazing shelter
I also noticed on their site they sometimes have volunteers who come to Edmonton bring dogs to their adoptive homes-so I offered that if a dog or two is waiting for a ride to Edmonton we’re free to bring some back with us since we are making the trip
I’m so excited, Dave’s wanted a dog his whold life and seeing him excited about something is so amazing-he never gets excited about the bunnies *hmppph* ![]()
aaawww, Petey’s cute AND already bunny-whipped, what else could you ask for?

Congratulations!!! Bunny and puppy hugs from NJ ![]()
Yay for corgis and thank you for adopting!!!!!! If you hadn’t found him I would have suggested you come out to CA, we have shelters full of small dogs of every type you could imagine.
Your boy is a lot smaller than my corgi mix, who weighs 55lbs but is also only 15 inches tall. I call him Buddy Stubs because his legs are so darn short. One day I want to get him a Corgi girlfriend from the shelter named Peggy Shortlegs. ![]()
Wow, yeah! A dog! A home isn’t a home without one… so you are getting yours just in time!
–what kind of breed did the breeder have that you visited?
I can see the Corgi in Petey! I know there are 2 types of Corgis- one with short tails/ Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis with long tails (I am sure there must be other differences). I think I have only seen Pembrokes in person.
Honestly I think you are better off going a different route than Shiba Inu- there are a couple of clients at work that own them and they are HIGH energy. There is pair of them that have played with our Aussies at the dog park- and Aussies are considered high energy too. The Shiba’s let our dogs chase and stalk/herd them- all in play- until our dogs were flopped out, panting- and the Shiba’s were still raring to go. They always brought their dogs into the large dog area of the park since the little dogs were not enough to play with them and tire them out.
Shelties are great dogs too- but unless you were getting an adult i would worry about the height restriction- I have seen Shelties from 15lbs to 65lbs. There seems to be a huge size difference- but they are one breed- there in no “toy”, “miniature”, etc- so that could possibly be a concern as it would be heartbreaking to get a puppy that grows too big.
I am glad that you found a shelter dog- I was going to suggest looking for specific breed rescues if you had a breed or 2 in mind.
Congrats- Petey is a total cutie. And it looks like he is just a big marshmallow that the bunnies will be able to manipulate to their will.

And so parenting Petey begins.

He’s a sweetie. (I’m lazy and like direct links, so I linked ’em.)
yipeeeeeee! i’m so excited for you both
he’s adoreable k&k! his temperment in the vids and the fact that the shelter said he was submissive reminds me sooo much of bogart. with any luck you’ll have as bunny-friendly of a pooch as i do! and with the buns in their own room you’ll have the safeguard of separate spaces while they all adjust to eachother. how exciting!
He does look a great nature in the vids. btw, Jersey has just run off under my bed on hearing that yappy dog at the shelter – lol.
Lostbutnotforgot, Buddy Stubs (lol) looks beuatiful! Def golden retriever in him. I’m also really envious of that lush lawn!!!
K&K, just a small tip for Dave on Petey’s first training session: Bunny Berries Appreciation Course. How to locate, consume and savour bunny berries. Your humans will shower you with even more affection!
Ah, K&K! Congratulations! I’m also REALLY glad that you’re adopting (as I’m sure you are!). I’m with Lostbutnotforgot…you want a short pup, come out my way! The shelters are full of them…
And I also agree with Pam. Anything that plays nice with an evil conniving (*Lizzy STOP EATING THE COMPUTER!!!!*) English Spot has to be a good creature!

Thanks everyone!! We’re beside ourselves excited-I can’t believe the shelter was willing to hold him for us-we’re paying boarding fees until May 2 but still we weren’t sure it would be possible! He just seems so perfect and I’m so excited to give him a forever home!
Lostbutnotforgot-your boy is soo cute-and what a cute name for a possible GF for him!
We’d checked all the shelters, petfinder etc, and he’s the only small dog who isn’t a $*&!zu or something along those lines which Dave did not want. Our shelters are full but they are often big dogs (I love big dogs but we just can’t have one)-actually our HS here went to California to get small dogs from a shelter in CA -our shelter was lined up around the block the day they came here for adoption-they even adopted larger dogs in bigger numbers then usual that day. I’d hope they could continue doing something like that!
He looks like a fratboy dog. Haha.. so much fun!
K&K that is so cool that a shelter would do that! Yeah, it does take some transport, but if there’s a demand for small dogs and there’s definitely a supply, even if it’s a little far, it is totally worth it! I love how Petey looks though. I can’t quite pin it, but I think he might actually have some Australian Cattle Dog as well as Corgi. The spots on him kind of lead me to believe that, but at the same time the eyes and ears, while trademark of Aussie Cattle dogs, are also classic Corgi. Maybe smooth Collie? Idk, just full of cute! I’m glad he is such a sweetheart, I know my boy is, especially with the rabbits (well, he gets the same eyes Petey has in that picture). The only reason Buddy ever chased cats is because he had been kept outside before I got him so it was a ‘sport’, but he never bats an eye at them any more.
Jersey, I thought Golden for a while, but if he does it’s distant and is only for the fur. He definitely has American Staffordshire, even if it’s hard to see in that picture. He’s got a massive jaw, and a true pit personality. He’s taken some rehabilitation, but now puts full trust in me and isn’t nervous around other dogs (he was attacked while in the shelter and had some scarring on his back hip). We first saw Buddy at the shelter he was transferred to (after the attack) and he barked and seemed hyper, so we didn’t have much interest. Then we had a spring break and two weeks later we went back and he was still there. Then we brought him home. Haha. The funniest thing about Buddy is that one of his legs is shorter than the other so his dewclaw on one side doesn’t wear down.
Lostbutnotforgot– Really? I would guess his parents “threw” quite a bit of that distant retriever gene into him based on looks. I know what you mean about Petey +cattle dog. Like kelpie or heelers. At first glance I though he had a dingo like look even though they are really lean.

Tehe! Your “Shi tzu” must have gotten whopped by the swear filter! I was thinking…”Gee, she really mustn’t like that breed” at first. hehehea!

That’s what I thought too!
And that’s what I thought about Petey too, that’s why I said Aussie Cattle dog. Our neighbors have always had one and I’ve always thought it looked like a Dingo. I think that they might actually be decendents of, or at least have some crossbreeding in their history.

Actually, I found this on Wikipedia!
The precise origins of the Australian Cattle Dog are not known, but they appear to have been a distinct breed as early as 1897. It began when Smithfields were originally used in Australia for mustering cattle. They were noisy and bit too hard, so they were bred with the Dingo, a wild dog prevalent in Australia. The resulting crosses were known as “Timmins Biters,” which were quieter, but still bit hard.
A primitive stage of Collie unlike that of today’s Border Collies and Smooth Collies, used for mustering sheep, were then bred to the dingo. In 1840, Thomas Hall bred a couple of Blue Smooth Highland Collies with dingoes and produced “Hall’s Heelers”, the noted, hardy, tireless, controllable, strain of dog.[7] Then, in the 1870’s Fred Davis bred some Bull Terrier into them to make the dogs more aggressive. These were relatively common as sporting and guard dogs in the late 19th and early 20th century.
The resulting Cattle Dog was of a slightly heavier and more muscular build than the Border Collie and of less temperamental nature, with good herding ability, the stamina to withstand extremes of temperature and the resourcefulness to forage and to feed itself on an omnivorous diet like a wild dog. Physically the Heeler has inherited a big broad head and strong jaws from the Bull Terrier. From the dingo comes the distinctive sandy colour of the legs and rather large pricked ears.
NEAT!!! And oh my gosh does that ever look like what’s in Petey!
I have this kind of running joke about border collies being the ‘easy’ dogs of the breeds-because umn….EVERY shelter lists every mix as ‘x breed-border collie cross” LOL
LOL
Jersey I didn’t even think about it when I wrote the breed name-and didn’t even spot that the swear filter caught it
That’s way too funny!
Lost, that makes sense, the heeler/dingo link. Petey certainly has look of red heeler. BUT – I would not fall down dead to discover he’s a golden retriever x corgi. I know, I know, i’m seeing goldies in every dog but there’s just something about his eyes…(i’m scoffing at myself, as if you can tell a breed by the eyes!!!) but also in his general demeanour in those videos. Anyway, he can be whatever, but I’m sure K&K would appreciate the exotic-ness of part dingo!
Jersey, sometimes I think you CAN tell the breed by the eyes! I know a woman who raises seeing-eye-dogs… They’ve traditionally been breeds like Golden Retrievers, for the loyalty/calmness/intelligence factors, but she works with Standard Poodles, who are also smart, and hypoallergenic. One of her dogs was a GoldenDoodle (Golden Retriever/Poodle cross). Looked EXACTLY like a Poodle, until you looked into his eyes…and there was a Retriever looking back at you!
K&K, I think a lot of it depends on what the shelter thinks is a popular dog in the area to be honest. When my mother was looking for a dog here in Winnipeg it seemed like every single dog said it was a shepherd-X! Even the one she adopted they said was part shepherd, and there’s just no way (we think she’s lab/chow). I just checked their site and they still seem to be doing that, although they are showing more “collie-x” dogs as well. Even when some of them, to me at least, clearly aren’t.
I mean really, they have this girl listed as a border collie mix – does she LOOK like a collie?
I have to say they are doing really good with taking pictures and managing to get that “please adopt me” look. This one according to them is a husky mix:
– Annnette
I mean really, they have this girl listed as a border collie mix – does she LOOK like a collie
LOL The dog is black and white and/or looks like a dog-so it’s a collie mix Duh!! LOL
The husky mix actually looks german shepardy to me…maybe crossed with a border collie? *rolling* LOL ![]()
