Bambi has been changing her behavior a bit lately. Now everytime I pet her she makes a grunting noise but does the usual and lays flat out so I can groom her. I’m not sure what brought that on but she has been making a lot of grunting noises, especially when she gets spooked when the dogs barked. She has never made noises like that before. Granted she is just about to turn 1 and I have owned her since she was 4 months old.

I’m still behind on getting her spayed because 1) haven’t found a vet that spays rabbits and 2) don’t have the money as of right now to get that done. If I get her spayed will she stop the scent marking? It drives me crazy. Everywhere she goes everything has to have a chin rub.

The altering should help the spraying behavior however the chinning will likely remain as that is one of the favorite methods of a bunny to mark territory. Can you describe the grunting? Is it the same grunt she uses when spooked as when she is pet?

Ok she just grunted again. I caught her upstairs and she knew better than to be up there. She stopped and I was about to pick her up and she started grunting. I looked it up and I read several articles and they all said that it is because she is scared. Well I know she isn’t scared of me because she runs circles around me and follows me around everywhere I go. She has just recently started making the grunting sound as I go to pet her or pick her up. She doesn’t run away from me. When I go to pet her she just relaxes and stretches out like in my picture. She will grunt while I’m petting her but she doesn’t act as though she is scared or in pain. Hmm.. I’m puzzled. Never had a rabbit act that way.

One of my buns is 5yrs old, been fixed for 2 and loves to grunt. Your bun has probably just figured out she can communicate so she keeps doing it. All my buns either grunt, growl, oink, honk, etc. Cracks me up.

Your in Cincy so if you want to find a rabbit savy vet the best place to look is with the Ohio Buckeye Rabbit Society in Cincy. http://www.ohare.org Front page has a list of Recommended Cincy Vets.

Our Humane Society here in Dayton does low cost spays but there is no follow up after surgery and that is really required w/ buns. So if you had your bun fixed here you would still end up paying $ for a week later checkup. It is cheaper to just have the same vet fix your bun because the follow up is usually a part of the cost of the spay.

              Hope this helps!

my pinky bun grunts a lot.  it sounds sort of like a “hmmMmm” noise and she does this both when she’s irritated and when she’s excited.  it usually precedes a loud thump (=irritation) or she’ll grunt & run to the front of her condo when i come into her room (=excited).  but then she also grunts & thumps a lot when she has free time out of her condo & is just sniffing around so… ???  that one thing i’m sure of is that her grunts are not out of fear.

my other bun – baby – only grunts like this when i lay down on the floor to give her cuddles.  she’ll grunt with pleasure as she runs towards me =)
