I’ll be a pro rabbit owner by the end of the month haha… There’s something new to learn everyday.

Question …  I was giving my Holland Lop Aesop a once over this morning, and noticed that his night feces are getting caked around his rear.  I took a damp tissue and wiped him a few times, but there is still a significant amount there.  It is not obstructing his bowel movements, but I’m sure it’s been happening since I got him a week ago.  He might still be too young to know to clean it off of himself very well or something.  He was born 9/12/2009 … still a youngin.

I’m still very very new to being a rabbit owner, and I haven’t even mastered picking him up, let alone grooming with a scissor.  I don’t want to hurt him, but I know I need to remove those clumps.

        Any suggestions?

        Thanks!

Try using cornstarch. Just rub it on his little butt and work the poops out of his fur. I wouldn’t suggest using scissors, he could jump all of the sudden and get cut.

            Good idea.  thanks!

Ya know, I use cornstarch and vinegar to clear the pipes in my house sometimes, I should have put 2 and 2 together hehe.

            Take care!

Welcome berkua! You mentioned his night poop but it may also be his normal poop that is mushy. It might be worth getting it tested as messy poop is pretty common in young rabbits and can be fixed up if treating the cause is done early. I wouldn’t think it his not knowing how to clean himself – rabbits just do this instinctively. It could be a simple matter like diet or some stress adjusting to his new home causing messy poop also, but best to test for parasites just in case. If cornstarch doesn’t work for you, try soften it with water. Wetting the hind end only and making sure he’s well dried afterward. Hope you were successful cleaning him up. Aesop is a cute name!
