Greedy Rabbit?

Hey everyone,

So as im new to this rabbit business im completely lost at how much i should be feeding him.

Everytime I go into my kicthen he jumps up as if he wants food.

I leave him pellets every morning topped off with a small amount of greens (coriander and cabbage) along with his dry alfafa grass which he has plenty of. The greens are gone before i even leave the house and pellets are definitely gone by the time i return home (leaving from 9 returning at 4).

I feed him the same amount for his dinner.  But he literally goes mad for his food by the time dinner comes, he’s OBVIOUSLY not starving but anyone would think it the way he reacts and jumps up looking all cute and hungry when im in the kitchen! lol.

I was actually giving him a full bowl full of pellets, then read the back of the package which said baby rabits should only be fed 100g, so i cut it down.. but just doesnt seem enough.

So is this rabit just greedy?  He’s about 4 months now.  I dont want an obese rabit on my hands!!

I would start feeding him some grass hay like timothy or orchard. At his age he can get more pellets because he is still growing.

Not really sure how much 100gm’s is for rabbit pellets compared to cups though…that’s an odd way to measure pellets. How many cups are you giving him – 1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/4 cup?

ermm… I would probably say its a about half a cup. He does have fresh grass daily too which i pick from my garden and mix with his alfafa grass.

He really needs to have grass hay as well probably more than the fresh grass from the garden. Grass hay is essential to a rabbit’s diet and this will help fill him up as well.

You could also up his greens but give a bit more variety as well. Add some lettuces like romaine or green leaf and some parsley. A bit at a time though.

He eats cabbage, coriander, rocket – so quite a mix. I thought the Alfafa was the Grass Hay that was essential – this is what i was advised by the shop that sorted me out with everything when i got him.

Alfalfa is not a grass hay, it’s a grain hay and it’s fine for young rabbits but they do need a grass hay such as timothy or orchard as well.

What quantity of greens are you feeding him? He sounds like a hungry guy!

And I just have to add, I love your profile pic. He is adorable. He looks like a puppy with floppy ears!

Oh yay! I have a whole bag which i used when i ran out of alfafa, so i’ll start giving him that regulary. thanks very much!

I agree that he should have plenty of Timothy, orchard grass or meadow hay, and maybe you could start introducing a new veggie or two, but there is one thing that no one mentioned. Rabbits are quiite good beggars and they quickly learn where their food comes from. It’s not at all uncommon for bunnies to get excited when they see you head for the refrigerator or any place where you keep their food. I have one rabbit who practically jumps into the refrigerator if he is close to it when I open the door.

Thanks tobyluv. Seems no matter how much food i give him, he is jst a beggar! lol. I now give him meadow hay everyday, so he has a constant supply. I also give him more pellets – so he’s hardly gonna starve. I give him a mix of cabbage and green leaves, twice a day. I give him apple now and then, but he’s not overly keen. Lucky enough to have an apple tree in my garden, so ive snapped off a few brances as i heard they enjoy chewing on them!

So yeah, he still jumps around like a mad man every time he sees me in the morning and watches me in the kicthen. He also waits by feet sometimes when im making his food. So im sure he’s eating enough, just gets excited!

Oh, yes. All my bunnies act like they are starving when it comes to time for pellets or greens But trust me.. they aren’t
