        Hi everybunny

        (Like my pun LOL)

anyway what kind of litterbox please put pictures of your preferred kind of box

should I have a grate or not and should I put hay in a hay rack instead of the litter box even though rabbits will not eat the soiled hay

Hi! I don’t have a picture handy, but Louie’s litter box is a Van Ness Covered Litter Box. I bought it online for a good price and removed cover/lid and just let him hop in and out with no grate. I allow some hay in the litter box and also hang a hay bag right above, so he can easily get some fresh hay if all is soiled, but it never is.

I’m not sure about grates. I think they are bad for their feet but some people use them because their rabbits dig in the litter box. But not every rabbit does that. You can put hay in the litter box and in a rack so they have something soft to sit on while eating. You wanna make sure your box is big enough so the rabbit doesn’t start peeing and accidentally get it all outside the box. You can use cat litter boxes or big plastic tubs. You also wanna make sure the edges are tall enough to catch any mess, but not too tall for your rabbit to not wanna jump in lol. 🙂 I got my litter boxes from the dollar store $4 CAD each. I just hope they’re big enough for my 11 pound bunny, I haven’t seen him in real life yet. I get to pick up my bunnies next week!

FYI the forum search function works well for questions like this that are somewhat general. It wasn’t working before the site update but now it works!

If you search “litter box setup” you will find lots of examples from past members and see the pro’s and con’s. 🙂  (be aware the first few results will be adds, so scroll down a bit to see the Binky Bunny results).

Yeah… there has to be a grate. Otherwise the entire litter box would be emptied onto the floor each night. But not all bunnies do this. In fact, everything was fine for about 7 years…

Anyway, if you choose to use a grate, I like the ones from the BB store. They just sit right on top of the litter, you don’t really need to worry about it hurting bunny feet. Pee goes through, but poop sits on top (no way for it to drop through anything). My solution was to simply flip it over each morning so the poop wouldn’t be sitting on top anymore. If you clean the box everyday, you could also carefully pick the screen up and let the poop slid off into a bag or whatever you use for soiled litter.
