How do I tell if a vet is good, there is a vet called Midtown vetrinary clinic that sees some bunnies but I am not sure if they are good. I asked a couple of questions but some the secretary did not know the answer to.

I asked a lot of the questions that rabbit.org said to ask.

I figured out that they use isoflorine as the anethetic. They do not withhold food before the operation. They remove both the ovaries and the uterus.

But I did not figure out how many spays the vet does a year or how many rabbit cliants the vet sees in one year. I also did not ffigure out the success rate of the spays, (I did not ask because I assumed that if she did not know how many spays are done in a year she did not know the success rate.)

Overall I am just not sure if they are rabbit savvy.

They also said that they did see some rabbits but their cliants were mainly cats and dogs.

you cannot judge a vet office by the receptionist/secretary. they oftentimes don’t know the specifics of what the vet does, just how to schedule appts and do the billing. what i would suggest is call back and ask to have someone call YOU back at a convenient time, either a vet tech who does work with the vet, or the vet himself. we’ve also had discussions about these different topics. just b/c a vet might not see many rabbits or do many surgeries in a set time period, does not mean they are not savvy. that might depend more on where you live, if the rabbit owners are actually taking their bunnies to the vet, or if it’s not considered a priority there. it’s great you are doing research. keep in mind you will also need to do an inital vet visit before the surgery, so you can ask more questions then as well.

Yes I also am looking at the price for the exam beforehand,

I found another vet, they seem really good and good price too, but they require withholding of food for four hours before the surgary, is that ok?

I will find a vet that seems decent in price and quality and then go meet them, my mom would not stand for driving me all over the place! lol.

there’s no reason to withhold food, i think it’s okay for a couple hours, but it’s really not necessary at all. again, is this the VET saying this, or the receptionist? she might be telling you the dog/cat instructions…

True true, I should make sure that she was saying the rabbit instructions, other than that that vet office seemed very good.

if the vet office sounds good to you, and knowledgeable besides the fasting thing, you could use them… i would just not fast the bunny and tell them you’re not going to b/c it’s not necessary.

I agree with Beka…It’s totally not necessary and they may just in fact be giving you the wrong info (was it a secretary who told you?). We’ve had members whose vet did not require fasting but the secretary thought they did and advised that. It could very well be a good vet but someone else is giving the wrong info out. If they were good on all your other questions then that sounds good

Have you checked this list from the Upstate New York Chapter of the House Rabbit Society?

Yes, I looked at all the vets on there, the one I am talking about is on there. The midtown vetrinary clinic is not on there though.
