So recently I’ve been giving Inkblot some apple every night after she gets her eye ointment.  Because fruits are generally sugary I would like to cut back on the apple and give her some kind of vegetable that might be like a “treat”.  I know while it may not have sugar it may have other things like calcium but if it’s in small quantities I’d prefer the calcium over the sugar I think.  I know people use carrots for this but this rabbit can’t stand carrots!  It might be bad to try to introduce some new veggie so late in her life but I’m hoping in small quantities her stomach will be okay.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hello! I have some spinach maybe I’ll give her a little bit and see if she likes it. I might try the parsley since a bunch of people have bunnies that seem to love it. I’ve gotta get to a market .

Hi Miyuki – My bunnies eat a large variety of green leafies and veggies – I think we’ve tried almost everything on the house bunny list!!!! Some of their favorites (though they don’t turn their noses up to many!!!) are cilantro, dill, and green pepper!!!

Hey everyone, is there some kind of guideline on the maximum amount of vegetables (specifically stuff like romaine) you can give a rabbit in a day?  She seems to be not interested in a lot of foods now days but is still gobbling up her romaine.

And I totally forgot about lettuce cores!  Normally I just toss them.  But the next time I’ll remember to let her eat it.  The first time I gave her one there was still lettuce leaf attached so I figured she’d just eat the left and leave the core.  But little did I know… I came back a little later and it was nowhere in sight!

Well if she’s a fan of romaine, she’ll adore the core! I don’t know about maximums. Generally it’s recommended that you give 2 cups a day. In my experience, I recently found out that too many veggies will lower their hay consumption which you dont want! You really want to try give atleast 3 different types of veg to cover the vitamins and minerals. Especially ones with high Vitamin A. In the Bunny Info Diet page on this site, there’s a link to a list of veggies. The one that are in bold type are high in vit A. Also, when giving alot of one type of veg, you have to be careful it doesn’t cause gas.

My buns LOVE dill, rosemary, mint, basil, cilantro, parsley. The rosemary and basil I only give in little bits but the rest I listed are parts of their 2cups per day. They also love brussell sprouts and red lettuce, curly lettuce.

My buns love dandelion greens and I give those w/ their 2 cups but in my grocery they only sell the stems..Ive never been to hawaii but does the actual “weed” grow in hawaii? We have them all over here and as long as your yard hasnt been treated w/ pesticide you can cut them out of your own yard and give them entire thing-yellow flower and all to your bun-the yellow flower might be seen as a nice treat for your bun!

BTW- BANANA is almost every bunnies favorite treat. Much less sugar content than an apple or carrot. Just give a sliver though. All my buns know what “naner” means now! lol

Nope no dandelions here. I have a lot of weeds but nothing a rabbit would want to eat. I tried to offer her a banana piece once and she sniffed it and ran away. Maybe if I leave it in a bowl she’ll taste it. But I ate the rest of that banana and it wasn’t that good. I wonder if apple-bananas have a higher sugar content than normal bananas.  I usually have those, only that one time I had a regular banana.

I’m gonna try to get to the market today and pick up a little bit of parsley and maybe some basil or mint. Start small and see what she thinks is really a treat .

banana has less sugar than apple or carrot? It seems sweeter. I feed the apple peel sometimes, it has less sugary flesh on it and the skin would add more fibre. (that’s my thinking anyways.)

                          What are apple-bananas?

Apple-bananas look like bananas but they aren’t as long. They taste sweeter than normal bananas. Okay that alone should tell me they probably have more sugar . They are called other things in other places but I’m not sure of the names.

Raisins are a good treat, partly because they are small so you’re not giving a large amount of treat when you give one or two.

And yes, Nannas are the ultimate treat that my bunnies would go crazy for.
