i listen to a local radio station while i work and the afternoon dj has been telling everyone to check out her blog to learn why bunnies do not make good easter gifts.  apparently a local humane society send out the info & she thought it was interesting.  here’s what she wrote…

        Important Easter gift giving info…

        Wednesday, March 19, 2008

Hi everyone, you know they are cute and cuddly but they are a responsibility- pet rabbits!
Yes, you would think this would be a brilliant gift for your little ones this Easter, but did you know all the demands that come with owning this animal?
Here are just a few points to consider from the Guelph Human Society:
        – Rabbits should be spayed or neutered.  It will prolong their life and make them more enjoyable pets.
        – Many rabbits don’t like to be picked up which can be frustrating for children.
        – A rabbit’s teeth never stop growing and require suitable material to chew to keep their teeth worn down.
        – As highly social animals, rabbits need daily interaction.
        – Rabbits cannot just stay in their cage; they need to be exercised daily outside their pen.
        – Rabbits can die if they are not given a proper diet.
        – Rabbits can die of fright and must be protected from exposure to predators (like some dogs and cats).
        – Rabbits will need a cage 4 times the rabbit’s size.  Multi-level dwellings with ramps are best.

So there you go, just thought I should share that in case you  wanted to get a bunny this weekend.  My advice-stick to chocolate!

        Cheers.
        Kathy

That’s great they mentioned that on your radio station. I have been spreading the word as best I can around here.

Our local newspaper also had a small blurb in the Editorials about not getting a bunny for easter with all the ones looking for homes at the rescues! That was so good to read!

I have heard several spots like this on my local radio stations. Several of the local companies also picked up on a PSA that was sent out by our local house rabbit society. I know at the end of one commercial it says. . . “with Easter coming up, you may be thinking about getting a pet rabbit for your kids, the Missouri house rabbit society would like to remind everyone that rabbits can live up to ten years and getting one is a lifelong committment. Contrary to popular belief, bunnies are not all cuddly, and they may not be the best pet for your children. If you are ready for the long term committment, there are lots of bunnies waiting to find their forever homes in shelters. ”

That may not be the exact wording but it’s pretty close. I’ve heard a few different messages, MHRS has their own commercial playing on several of the local radio stations too.

I was in a Petland store in Winnipeg the other day and was extremely pleased to see that they only had *1* rabbit in the entire store. No big display, nothing about Easter at all, and most importantly no cage full of baby bunnies looking all cute and cuddly and tempting parents to buy them for their kids.
