IM SO HAPPPPPPPY![]()

NANNY NANNY POO POO! BUTTONS IS GOING TO BE NEUTERED! JELOUS??? ![]()
Yay for neutering!!
Well you can ask the vet the trick question – how long before surgery should he fast? The answer is – no fasting. There is always a risk with any surgery or using anethesia but for boy buns the operation is very quick and it will help his overall disposition and yer parents (from being upset with his hormonal outbursts).
As for the laser surgery, I found this information. If I had the choice, I’d go for it. Not sure why it is cheaper though as usually they charge a little more in order to recoup the cost of the machine (which can run 20-30K to buy).
Laser surgery
Many veterinary clinics now offer laser surgery as an alternative to the traditional surgical method. A laser is an intense beam of light that replaces the scalpel as a surgical instrument. The laser seals nerve endings as it cuts so that the pet has less pain during recovery. The laser also speeds surgery by minimizing bleeding, does not crush tissue so reduces post-surgical swelling, and vaporizes bacteria and viruses that may be in the surgical area.
Veterinarians must attend training in the safe and effective use of the laser equipment to use the technique to its full advantage, avoid potential electrical and fire hazards, and protect the patient and the surgical staff from accidental reflection of the beam.
Laser surgery is not perfect. There is some clinical evidence that tissue may not heal as quickly as with traditional surgery, a situation that can require both veterinarians and pet owners to be vigilant during the recovery period. A dog that feels little pain or discomfort may attempt to resume her regular activities even though the tissue at the surgical site may not be completely healed.
Laser surgery is generally more expensive than traditional surgery. Cost of the equipment is $20,000-$30,000, leading veterinarians to charge at least a bit more for this procedure. Many veterinarians try to keep spay costs reasonable so the increase may be minimal.
For more information about laser surgery, see” Lasers Lead Surgery to the Cutting Edge” at http://www.darlenearden.com/articlelaser.htm
Laser is generally more expensive-so if it’s cheaper at your clinic that could be a very good thing. I’ve looking into lasers a lot and I quite like them. They are expensive and hence the surgery is generally more costly. If they have several vets using laser there-that may be why it costs less?
At any rate-glad your mom is on board ![]()
Laser is usually more expensive. As long as the vet is comfortable with using the laser for surgery- that is a great option.
The only disadvantage to a Sat surgery appt will be if the vet is not open the next day (Sunday) and Buttons needs to be seen- you will have to take him to an emergency vet and have higher fees and costs associated. My vet clinic typically does not do surgery on Fridays for that reason- we want owners to be able to contact us or see the vet if needed for post-surgical exam or advice- we will look at an incision from a surgery that we did for no charge. A vet that did not do the surgery and is seeing during closed office hours- will charge an emergency exam fee usually which can be $100+ in my area.
The vet staff should put Buttons in the carrier for your Mom when she picks him up at the clinic. You could always see if you can pick up Buttons after school, so you could go with your Mom.
GREAT NEWS! Honestly, I don’t know anything about laser, but it sounds like you’ve already gotten good info. I will need to look into the Avon Clinic. I’ve been having some iffy moments with my new vet. I’m just not thrilled with them. What about trying to schedule an appt for over your winter break? It’ll be here before you know it! And this way you could be with Buttons to monitor him longer. (And is he still inside?)
And I have to ask… what is it that helped your mother “see the light” about neutering?
It’s Sunday here, so can I assume that the deed is done?
That’s fantastic news – and I’m also curious what changed your mom’s mind.
How is Buttons now? ![]()
hahaha i was totally being the blonde i am. laser isnt 89$. its 89$ added onto the regular neuter price of 121$. so we ended up getting the regular neuter. and we got 3 days worth of metacam for pain and swelling relief. my bunnies a drug addict. he l-o-v-e-s his metacam so much lol. it smells pretty bad but when he sees the syringe with the metacam he literally jumps with joy!!! we sceduled for the 18th. and now its the 20th. buttons is healing great. we would really like to bond him to another rabbit in a few months. i have my eye on a cute litle girl from the shelter named bombeno….
http://www.clevelandapl.org/adoptions-smallfurries.htm
isnt she cute? and i think its safe to say that buttons is never living outside again. though i may put him out sometimes for a few hours. just for fresh air. buttons behivor really got to my mom. so i took advantage of the situtation to get a neuter. smooth move on my part LOL. im sooooo happy that he is neutered. we all are! my mom especially! now i have high hopes that one day he might actually sit on my lap for more than 5 seconds ![]()
P.S.— i am completely done with showing. i look at the rabbits and guinea pigs and it makes me think “what kind of a life is that for something so smart?” they just sit in these little cages for their whole lives and eat bad food and dont get companinship. with potential health problems brewing becuase they dont get vet care.
This is great! Hugs for you! I am so excited for you and Buttons, and that little dutch girl is PRECIOUS!
YEs I remember your Mom was totally against it thinking it hurt the bunny. Alright so the behavior got to her. Thats good. It was only a matter of time huh?
Glad it worked out for you cuz sometimes parents just say the pet has to go. I am glad your Mom isn’t that kind of parent. There really are some good parents out there. Good for you and bunny. ![]()

by the way does your Mom work in a DR’s office? A lady in my DR office they got a bunny for their son. She asked about housebuns and I gave her this site and HRS site too.
If you dont’ want to answer this question I understand due to your safety. And your families.
no she doesnt work in a doctors office. a school cafeteria actually. im so glad he is neutered…. and i am looking foreward to possibly adopting a friend bun for him ![]()
Yea for Buttons!
That wold be great if he could get his own sweetie!
buttons thinks so too. he would love to have a cute little girl for a friend. btw, do male/female bondings usually work? or is it better to bond male/male?
Opposite sex bonding will usually work out better/quicker than same sex bonds. Both need to be altered, so if you adopt a girl who has already been spayed, that is one less thing that you need to worry about. But male/male can work too, it will depend on the individual bunnies involved.
(And btw… $120 for a neuter is an amazing price. I’m glad you were able to find someplace inexpensive!)
good to know…. cuz buttons said he would specifically like a girl. so he could have a GF
i thought 120 was a pretty good deal ![]()
What wonderful news. It’s all done! And he’s indoors, too!
If you have a rescue shelter nearby with rabbits, you could take Buttons there for some dates. Most of them only give bunnies that are already speutered, so that would make things simpler and less expensive. Then he and you could pick out who you want without making a commitment if you don’t find someone he likes. So many bunnies get abandoned that it’s likely you’ll both meet someone to bring home after a few dates. Read MonkeyBun’s latest post on her dates to get Moose.
ooo, that Dallas is irresistible. That face.
Better have Buttons meet Bombeno first. Dutch girls can be tough cookies. (ie. Maryanne.) ![]()
yea dallas is pretty dang cute. i am taking him to the shelter because i dont want to bring the rabbit home without him meeting it. and then find out that he hates it soooooo much they will never bond. i will try bombno first. and then maybe cinnamon truffles. i love sam— he looks like such a gentleman and he looks so honest and nice. i adore his butterfly eye markings too! buttons and this new rabbit will have to share a cage when they are bonded. unless we find a way to expand the size or something. we might have to becuase i cant stop thinking about sam. he looks a bit under weight, dont you think? think he was starved? how could anyone do that to such a beautiful bunny? so size of the rabbit is a concern. i need someting around buttons size. not much bigger. and sam looks pretty big to me. i cant tell how large dallas is. his fur seems to have the plush rex look, but the shelter doent know what he is. the staff there doent seem to know much about rabbits. mostly dogs and cats. i hope he is a mini rex. but i am more willing to try male/female bonding. this is the same shelter my family has gotten both our cats from. cinnamon truffles seems pretty cute, and its a girl, so….. maybe buttons will like her. i cant wait to see who buttons chooses!
There are other rescues in the area that offer bunny dating too! Would your parents be willing to make a day trip to the Buckeye HRS? It’s about an hour and a half from me, so probably about an hour west of you… They will know much more about the bunnies (and you’ll have more to choose from!)
Here’s the site: http://www.ohare.org
They even have a beautiful dutch girl! But also keep in mind that one of the great things about bunny dating is that you don’t know who your bun is going to pick out. He or she may be any color, any breed, any size… so you could get to experience an entirely different bunny!
hmmm they are cute. my mom says we can look into it. its not much farther than the cleveland apl. and buttons does like car rides
but some words scare me… any breed is fine…but any size? i hope he doesnt insist on me adopting some flemish giant. im hoping he will find something, um, around his size. im afraid if he chooses anything bigger tan him there will be some major caging dilemmas. but we could work it out
whatever buttons wants buttons gets. LOL. did max/meadow pick out eachother? how did you know?
I think most of their buns are not going to be bigger than 10 pounds, which is manageable. You will need a much larger space for a pair regardless, so keep that in mind too. And you can pick who you try with Buttons… you might try one bun and they fall in love, or you might try 10 buns before you find one that he will tolerate. If you want to put smaller breeds in with him, start with that (but also keep in mind that larger buns may be calmer and easier to handle for you…) Keep an open mind going into it.
I did not date Max and Meadow. I was going to but a couple days beforehand we figured it might not be a good idea. Temps were in the high 90s that week and it was going to be a 3 hour trip to pick him up. I didn’t want to overly stress Meadow, especially since stress tends to throw off her eating habits for a day or so afterwards. They fought like cats and dogs (or two rabbits!) for about a week, then they started to tolerate each other… within three weeks they were the best of friends and have been inseparable for a year and a half now. I really lucked out! It’s better to date them so you have some idea what you’re going into. This also lets you meet some different buns. The people at the HRS are experts, so they’ll be able to help you find a good match for your sweet Buttons boy!
What kind of cage/space are you looking at for long term?
yes, i think it would make sense to introduce him to rabbits that were small. but if he doesnt hit it off with any of them, we could try others, of defferent sizes. how do you know if a rabbit “chooses” another? do they purr or lick eachother thorough the bars? or is it just a matter of buying the one that he doesnt want to kill? oh about the long term caging. i havent really thought too far into the future about this. his cage that he is in right now is fine for him. its nice and roomy with a grass mat, hidey house, litterpan, brick, food/water, a resting mat thing(its rubbery and clips into the floor) and a variety of toys. even though the floor is wire, nearly 3/4 of it is covered. i think the cage could hold one other small rabbit, if it was a dwarf size. but if he chose a larger rabbit, i was thinking of a way to make a tunnel from the door(on the side of the cage) to our dog crate. so the bunnies could go back and forth between them. this would give them extra space. it would be like having 2 cages in one. i dont know though. i might come up with some awesome idea or something. or i will find a really big and tall play pen! buttons and the future bun can go in this all day to play and run around and they can sleep in the cage at night.
The smallest size you’re going to want is 4 x 4 feet or some variation of that square footage. Even with a small breed, they still need plenty of room to hop around, remember that dwarf breeds are typically MORE active than larger breeds… Have you considered building a condo?
if we are being realistic, a condo might not be able to happen. we were talking (my mom and i) and it seems like buttons is really happy on his own. he gets all the attention and babying he could want (including warm facials and baby food), good food and playtime. and he is good friends with the cat, who spends the night sleeping next to his cage sometimes. and him and the dog play together. *uhhmmm* buttons idea of “playing” with the dog is attacking him and biting him. i am sortof crazy
what bunny wants a facial???? well, buttons likes them! dont worry, its no chemicals or anything. its just a warm wash cloth on his face and he loves it. no i really am crazy! lastnight buttons sat on my lap during dinner! btw we broke our record of sittin for 5 secons. we made it to 20 minutes! INCREDIBLEE LOL! he just is so happy we dont know if there is a need for another rabbit. and im going to college in 3 & 1/2 years and my parents will have to take care of him. another rabbit would add trouble for them. i think one devious bunny is enough
i really dont want to leave buttons but they are learning the ways of bunny care pretty well already. we arent set on not or gettting one. it still has a chance. if we do end up getting one we will take him somewhere around march.
If you’re not 100% sure yet, then definitely wait! You can always get another bun in the future, buns will always be around needing homes. I think Buttons is very lucky to have you and your parents to watch out for him. He is very loved!
we arent totally sure. we want everyone in the family to agree that it is the right thing to do, for him and us. we are still not totally sure. we want to make sure we are doing the right thing for him first. somewhere around next march we might take him up to the shelter
thanks beka ![]()
