Okay, during Saturday and Sunday, I head into my room to avoid the family, and Ollie gets about 6 hours of out-of-cage time to run rampent. However, during the week, I usually sit in the living room and sew until I head to bed, or do housework, or clean the yard, etc etc. So she doesn’t really get but maybe a half-hour of out-of-cage-time. Her cage isn’t all that big… measuring out the dimensions looked rather large, but it’s a combo of optical illusion and forgetting she’d need the litterbox, and chew-couch, and food dishes, and all that.

I can safely and easily section off an area that’s about three times her cage size, and I’ve contemplated doing that while I’m either A)at work, or B) doing the mundane work. Further, all access points in my room (under the dressers, under the bed, under the desk) are blocked off, so even if she escaped her safe-spot, the worst she could do is have full-access of my room. She’s never really messed with cords (I spent the first few days with her teaching her they were BAD, and she carefully edges WELL around them now, and I try to keep all cords tucked out of her reach anyway.

Is sectioning off that area and letting her have a little more room a good idea? The worse she can damage is the carpet, which she’s shown absolutely zero interest in.

I think it is a good idea, especially if the cage is small.

sounds like a good idea, thats how I started with Cady.. although didnt take him long to figure out how to get around the barriers I set and make the whole room his,  I would definitely just make sure any cords are really bunny proofed you never know what will happen unsupervised,  but other than that I think it will work well

I like the idea of sectioning it off for play time while you are at home, though not at work.

I also think that getting cord protectors are a necessary precaution for an unsupervised bunny. They sell them in long tubes, really cheap, at Walmarts and Radio Shack. Just spend an hour on the floor cursing and wrestling with them getting them on your cords, and they will last for years. I moved with mine still in tact on my lamps. A bunny will ignore something for years then wake up one morning and taste it. They are bored and fickle.

That sounds like a great idea – I would attach an xpen (or a pen made out of NIC grids) to her cage so that she can run around more. My two share a pet store cage attached to an xpen and it works great for them.

I second (or third) the covering the cords. I thought mine never chewed on them either, until I was deep-cleaning under the furniture and found little bunny bites out of my cords (the unplugged ones). So now all my cords are covered. It was really easy, I should have done it earlier (whoops).

Mine has an xpen attached to the cage too and LOVES it.
