Glands and Nails and Foot flicks, Oh my.

So, I bite the bullet and wrestled the kids for their gland and nail and overall belly check last night.

I never worry about Coco’s nails – she is a digger and seems to wear hers down naturally, but her anal glands are ALWAYS full, and I knew they were from the way her poops have been looking.

I took Jackson first, because I haven’t done him before. His nails were awful. I was shocked. I assumed that the shelter would have trimmed him prior to his adoption, but I don’t think they did and he had talons.

I was less nervous trimming him becuse they were so long – and he did better in the trance, allowing me to really clip. But my question is – did I leave too much? Should I have gotten his nails shorter? (Add to this that he has dark nails as a Gray Bun…) I didn’t hit the quick on any of them, as I was super cautious, but I worry that I should have gotten them shorter.

His glands were fine – he is skunkier than Coco, but his were clean. Her nails, as expected, were fine – but her glands were FULL.

Needless to say, I was treated to some serious bun cold shoulder last night ( even after Peace-Papaya treats were offerred) and foot flicks

with the nails, i always get as short as i possibly can. the quick can grow longer if the nails are left longer- so i just get as close as possible!

My buns are about due too…and Chubs has already been a cranky little nugget the past few days since his fight with Comet! I can just imagine the disdain I will be facing!

Oh god. I can’t get NEAR Monkey’s nails or glands. I have never been able to trance her, and she always seems to know when I’m going to try and burrito her, she runs away fromt eh towel. HATES having her head covered so thats a no go to pick her up. I HAD to pick the grouch didnt I

My understanding is that if you just trim a little off the nails, but do it more frequently, a quick that has grown long will begin to recede and you’ll be able to trim the nails shorter on the next attempt. I think it’s fine for now, but do them again soon.

I just did nails and anal glands a couple weeks ago-did my friend’s bun too.

Nails do as short as you can, but as pam said-more frequently and less is better. The quick will get long if left, so trimming more often is better Glad you caught those talons!! Bet he’s feeling ALOT better!

we tried to tackle this maintenance on mj the other night. my bf was able to get him in a burrito but he’s so fluffy that i had a hard time finding his glands, and when i did he managed to get a back footloose and kicked me in the mouth.

for the record, it hurt.

haha.. i guess we’ll have to give it another shot eventually.. maybe we need a lesson from the vet first..

it was pretty funny the next day when i had a little cut on my lip and it was kinda swollen. my ferocious rabbit.. haha
