My G/F’s bun has begun to show classic signs of GI Stasis, complete with the telltale poops.  It’s going to be a long weekend.

Oh no, let us know if you need any advice. Gravehearted has been fighting it with Hareiette too. Let us know how her bun is doing.

How is the bun doing now? In addition to Spacehopper’s advice – lots of cilantro too. I think because the scent is so potent the buns can’t help but munch it down! And break the stems in half so the scent is even stronger, that usually tempts my most difficult of post-spay non-eating cases.

The bun’s doing better now. She’s back to her old investigative self. She still isn’t poopin’ properly but she’s drinking and peeing okey. The X-rays not only showed some sort of gas inside of her but also some bad bacteria growing. She’s been given Baytril as usual for the infection, something I forget now to help lubricate her insides and also some high-fiber food that we have to force feed – inject into her mouth 5 times a day. She’s only nibbling on her bedding at the moment.

My personal guess is that by tomorrow morning, she’s going to find a nice, large pile of bb’s for her to have fun with…

                          Mark

I’m glad you were able to get the bun to a vet.  Bacterial infections of the intestines can get really serious really fast, even resulting in bloat and death.  Is the stuff you are feeding her called Critical Care?

Well it sounds like you nipped the worst part of it in the bud.  Hope things are even better by tomorrow!

Glad she is doing better! Have you tried some herbs or something fragrant like cilantro to get her to try to eat greens? Moobunnay suggests breaking parsley or cilantro to release the fragrance and maybe that will entice her. Also kale and dill seem to entice my buns to eat – give all those a try too.

Did the vet give her any fluids or reglan (metroclopromide)?

                                Keep us updated.

aww, I am glad you got her into the vet for care and meds, it really helps to get them in quickly.

I’ve been going through something similar with Hareiette and it’s really stressful. I hope she’s taking her meds ok and doing the best she can with the assist feeding.

So, the bunny’s out of the woods. She’s eating and pooping again. The g/f says that they are still ‘a little small’ but she’s no longer straining to go and is her usual neurotic self again. So, bearing any unforseen complications, she’ll be just fine.

We were lucky and recognized the signs immediately.  She had planned to wait another day (for when I was off work) but that could have been disasterous.  All in all, it cost me about $600 (including loss wages) but who can refuse the cute faces?

And I am crying over spending $75 on a chiropractor for me.  Where are my priorities?

it’s a condition that rabbits can develope very quickly, and is first detectable by their eating / pooping habits.  you can read more about it here: http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/ileus.html
