How do you guys store your hay/pellets/litter?  I know some of you probably buy the bales and store them in your garage, etc… but you’ve still got to keep some outside to stop from trekking outside all the time….

So!  Do you guys use tupperware?  I used those giant zip lock bags with the handle and they were great, but has anyone compared the two?  Ziplock’s definitely cheaper ($8 for 3) and keeps the smell in the bag really well (and last for like three years)… but what about the other?

PS.  They had to have started as an April Fool’s Day prank…

Pellets go into a cannister (like you keep flour/sugar in) or if there isn’t room they stay in the sealed bag.

I have a big former-popcorn-can that I use for litter (wood stove pellets) much the same way – I fill the can from the bag and then the bag goes back up on top of the kitchen cabinets. Spare sealed bags live in the basement storage locker but off the floor.

Hay goes in a big rubbermaid tub with the excess staying in it’s shipping box, again on the top of the kitchen cabinets.  I’m 5’3″ so I only use that space for things I don’t need for months at a time.

Pellets I store in a clear plastic canister thing I got at Kroger. What doesnt fit I leave in the bag and use it when the rest is gone. I buy bags of hay from the pet store and usually have several different bags that I switch around with daily. So all my bags sit in a big rubbermaid tub, and the lid has holes in it for proper ventilation. But half the time the lid isnt used just because Im lazy lol. I have a medium sized garbage can with a lock on lid that I store my wood stove pellets in. The whole bag doesnt fit but most of it does, and whats left I just leave in the bag till I need to refill the can.

Office Depot just had a sale on covered Rubbermaid type square storage boxes that are about half the size of a tub, and I use a twist tie to close the bags, then put them into the plastic box together with a scoop. The pellets bags are self sealing.

I’m in an apartment, so in my small closet in the bunny/guest room I have spare litter (bag in shopping bag) and several more lidded plastic boxes for other supplies that I don’t use often.

I am actually shopping for a low cupboard with doors in the front to stash all of the boxes into that will look nice but hide the variety of supplies on a couple of shelves.

Hay needs to breathe. I buy two 40 oz oxbow bags at a time, and I dump both bags into a cardboard box for storage. I close it loosely to allow air to circulate in and out. For pellets, I have a small plastic “sterilite” container. I keep my measuring cup in there as well. I know the oxbow bags have little zippers at the top, but I find it easier to use the plastic box.

For litter, I stack the 40 lb bags of woodstove pellets underneath my dining room table.  I can fit 8 bags easily… lol.    When I open a bag, I pour some of it into a larger sterilite container for ease of use and I use a cup to scoop it as I need it.

*Having been invited over to a cozy dinner by the fire, Beka’s guests looked on with alarm as she proceeded to light the wood stove pellets under their feet. “Flambe, anyone?” She asked.*

My dad works at a company that makes metal pails and brings a lot of them home.  So we use them to store litter, shredded paper, pellets and their trash in it.  Their hay is in a small plastic container from Target (in their room) and the rest of it is in a plastic garbage can in the basement and what we can’t fit (because we get a whole bale from my brother-in-law’s parents who are farmers) we put in the garage.  My husband just built a shelf just to put the hay in it.
