Ok, holy smokes, I saw this pic before but I thought it was photoshoppped but it’s actually real!!!
Oh my goodnesss I need one of these!!!
Speaking of giants…There was a lady on here who had a flemish giant…I can’t remember her name…Are you still on here? Can you give us some recent pics of your bunny?
Not to ruin the moment but the reason that the rabbits are being bred so dang big is so that they can feed impoverished areas of other countries. The high reproductive rate linked to the quick growth to adult size makes them an ideal food source.
OMG are you sure this is for real??? I love him. Since we’re talking so much poop today, can you imagine the amount this guy would leave???!!!!!
Hey xnovalentine – How about this guy for ole Lulla? That’d scare her straight for sure!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, unfortunately this person is selling these rabbits as food. Such a shame for such an incredible rabbit. Like marksudark said.
Hmmm, maybe I should get one for Maryann… Let’s see her try to take a bite out of that thing.
LOL she may have met her match!
I need one, look how squishy they are!!
*not thinking about the why they are being bred*
LOL – I think you should get one for Maryann and for Lullabelle :~)
haha you guys are a riot…
lullabelle is a bossy little one. I think she may have the guts to put that one in HIS place. Haha! I was at my moms with her a couple weekends ago, and she has a HUGE cat…its very obsese LOL, about the size of that giant bunny….lullabelle was running after her trying to play, and the poor cat was scared crapless…the cat would hiss and growl and bat at lulla but lulla’s just like “HEY! Lets Wrassle!” lol I dont thinks shes afraid of anything, except the toilet…she runs when that flushes. hahaha.
You know, even if they are being bred for food, I think there could be a pet market for these guys. I’d have found a way to order one already if I weren’t (a) living in a dorm and (b) allergic to everything but rexes. >__<
I don’t understand how anyone could eat something so cute.
I have that picture on my notice board at work and also on my fridge at home.
I suppose a lot of animals are bred for human consumption … but it still sux.
Dawn xx
I need one, look how squishy they are!!
*not thinking about the why they are being bred*
too funny k&k… you’re the first person i’ve known to also use the term ‘squishy’ to describe cuteness my step brother got a lab puppy not long ago & when i told him she was very squishy he looked at me very strangely. lol.
that bun sure is the biggest cutest thing ever! i wonder how many greens you’d have to feed him? i def think he’d be a great companion for maryann & lulla!
Holly cow! It’s about the size of one.
Dawn I was thinking of that rabbit for Luey, maybe not as it would frighten the heck out of him.
Hey Lisa
Maybe that is what Luey does need … a smack around the chops by his big bear (bunny) paw. LOL
Dawn xx
Imagine THAT flopped on your living room floor!
Imagine nosing through someone’s window (thinking of our ground floor flat) and seeing him leaping about the room!
Imagine THAT jumping on the bed in the night and sticking his butt in your face wanting cuddles!! I WANT ONE!
i would love a big bun like that! i have a dream of sometime having a huge rabbit. where did that flemish giant mama go? i was looking forward to living out my giant rabbit dream vicariously thru her. can BinkyBunny contact her and demand she return to the board? lol…
Hallo i’m Stefanie
sorry my english is not good
I’m new here and come from germany.
The man on the picture is a breeder.
He is breeding many of this chiant bunnies.
He sell that bunnies to korea
I’m an animal right activist.
And we dont want that what this man do.
Sorry so bad english
welcome Stef! so you are familiar with this breeder? it is a shame that he sells them for food. i think it would be really neat to have one as a house rabbit. have you seen these rabbits in person? or you just know of them?
Welcome Stef!
Don’t worry about your english! My german would be a lot worse!!
Yes, let’s get this man’s contact info and make up an order for several to be shipped to us!! I was just telling Dave last night that was our next rabbit!!
One of those and a mini-horse, and bond them-oh how lovely would that be-errr-I mean SQUISHY!!!
Not too long ago, there was someone who owned a large rabbit and walked it around Annette’s mother’s home. Not quite as big as this guy, but considerably larger than ours. Also unlike ours, this bunny would actually go where you wanted it to go! It was like walking a dog and very strange-looking.
When we take our bunnies out on a harness and leash to the park down the street, they basically walk us because they’ll hop where they wish.
–Scooter
wow!!!
I mean not to stir up any crap or insult anyone, but what makes rabbits different from any other factory farmed animal being bred and consumed for meat or fur?
Sad, yes, but like, look at calves (veal), cattle, pigs (one of the smartest animals), chickens, etc…
Some cultures eat horse, dog, guinea pigs, well, anything under the sun that we might see as "pets". That doesn’t make it wrong…
You have to avoid being culturally biased… just because we (Western societies) think eating big fluffy bunnies is unacceptable, other cultures likely think it is fine and that is not something that should be held against them.
They could just as easily swing it back at us…
So…without creating too much controversy… just because he breeds them for meat does not make anyone bad.
I think that everyone with pets feels a bit of heartache that an animal that they would like to welcome into their home could end up as food instead – since Binky Bunny is a happy place where we try to cherish, appreciate and support happy and healthy lives for our bunnies and all of their bunny brothers AND sisters around the world, lets try to stay away from a debate on a post that is otherwise very SQUISHY in a happy cute way
Instead let us focus on something I often daydream about – the first thing you would do if you got a GIANT RABBIT as a pet!
The first thing I would do is sit with said GIANT RABBIT on my couch, and we would watch "Wallace and Grommitt’s new WereRabbit" movie. Then I’d go to Big Lots to buy him a giant dog bed to sleep in next to my bed! Then – I would probably fly to Germany/England/ wherever the rest of his brothers were and bring them home and be surrounded by giant rabbits for the rest of my days (and live up to my "Bunny Lady" name).
I’d ride him.
hey stef! Welcome to the boards! I speak german if you ever need to translate anything, let me know! Well actually i shouldn’t say i speak german — i read it really well lol its my second major in college, and i live in Basel, Switzerland for a little bit. Anyway the point was, you can contact me if you need help in understanding or saying anything, i’ll try my best!!!
welcome steph! i speak a wee bit of german too but i already know your english is way better than my german!
if i was lucky enough to bring a giant bunneh home the first thing i’d do is instigate a giant cuddle puddle. altho retaliation from a bun that size might really hurt
^^ Ahhh hahah oh cuddle pile would be first on my list!!
😮 wow you guys speak german-thats neat!!!
Hmm babybunsmum – I didn’t think about possible rabbit retaliation – or what if they found me dangerous and *THUMPED* which set off the other Giant Rabbits? I wouldn’t have a floor anymore!
I agree with MooBunnay. God let’s not go there because that will be a no win discussion!
I’m curious, how long do these big guys live?
actually that is a good point, usually the larger an animal in a species (re; dogs and horses) the shorter the lifespan and viceversa
OK-> So when we place our “Giant rabbits to north america” order, we will order the ones that live longer
Can you emagine if that big guy started thumping, you would think it was an earthquake.
Can you emagine if that big guy started thumping, you would think it was an earthquake.
ahahahahahah!!!
my boyfriend pointed out….(of course boys would)
What would their “poopy butt’ episodes be like?? And uneaten cecotropes? *ewwwww* lol!
And here’s my mom’s contribution:
What would happen when that guy binkies!! LOL
poor guy is fat he’d break something if he binkied. I want one!!!!! He looks so cuddley…lulla would be jealous.
I don’t know whats funnier – imagining their cecotropes or imagining their binkies! I can say for sure that no one living in an apartment that is anywhere BUT the ground floor should not have one. I live in a 3rd floor apartment and I can just imagine the complex office calling me one day “ahem, ma’am, we have your giant rabbit here at the office, he fell through your floor”
Hey its great so many persons are speaking german here.
I hope I advanced ( is that ok ) my english here in the internet forum.
Back to the giants rabbit.
http://cellar.org/2006/bigassrabbit.jpg
This rabbits are called in germany ,, deutscher Riese ,,
http://cellar.org/iotd.php?threadid=12996
Here is an german link
http://www.deutsche-riesen.com/index.html
there is various colors
because they are so big, they didn’t have a long lifetime. Not longer as 7 years just about.
Answer of the question if I know that breeder.
No I don’t was familiari with that man. I know him only from the newspaper or TV.
The animal rights activists to dislike that man because he sell the bunnies to korea.
It’s a long fly and stress for the bunny.
Apropos, he want 90 Euro for one Bunny.
Before I forget, here is the homepage from the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals where I am
We help rabbits who abused and have not a good home.
We look for a loving home for that poor animals and we adviset peoples who have bunnies.
I hope that all of you can read what I write
Thanks for the info. What are their personalities like? Are they like dogs? Are they friendly? It makes me just sick to think of their ultimate fate but like someone said we don’t want to even go there. Hey guys – now we have a contact for getting us giant rabbits!!! That is unless they are not friendly!!!
I try to answer the questions.
This big rabbits are very gentle und trusting.
They are gentle giants.
Dogs? mh, it is just like little racials. Some are afraid an others not.
There are different racials from this big bunnies.
Here are with hanging ears , max. weight is 18 pounds
http://kaninchenzucht.de/rassen/index.php?rasse=dw
this Link is from the homepage from the german breeders.
With many pictures.
Oh now I just really have to have one!!!! Trip to Germany anyone??????????
*wipes the spat-out coffee off the monitor*
oh my god. post of the week!
Count me in!!! And we have a friend there now!
OK K & K forget the rescue idea! Let’s start a giant rabbit society and bring a bunch back from Germany!!! Can you imagine a plane filled with giant rabbits strapped in the seats? Ok now I know I’m losin it!
i would not breed those rabbits, but i’m actually kinda surprised that no US breeders have ever tried to bring some over here and breed them. i wonder if they have tried but if the size makes them more difficult to breed or less fertile or something.
(again… i’m not promoting breeding rabbits. just want to make that crystal clear.)
I was thinking that becuase airlines only allow one animal on the passenger deck, we’ll need a private plane to bring them back! I don’t like animals flying in the cargo area!
I think so
This was a joke Beka! No I would never want to breed them!!! I do wonder how big the babies are – can you imagine how cute they would be?
I think maybe the reason they aren’t bred here is, uh, the reason they are bred there is not really a reason to breed them here…I’m being vague but you get me right?
Yes I think you are right and I’m glad they are not!
If I had a big bunny like this, I think I’d train him to sleep in my bed with me. n___n Can you imagine if one of those kicked in their sleep, though? You could lose a limb. >__<;;;
break a rib I think I would land on the floor. lol. yes he would be good at fertilizing I do know there are flemish giant breeders in the U.S. I dont’ know if they get as big as that german one tho. never seen one in person. imagine having to carry him somewhere. break my back loll
what a doll tho he looks mellow
I love his toes, so cute. I saw another pict, maybe the same guy but it’s sad he’s holding this HUGE rabbit by the back of the neck and he’s almost as tall as the guy holding him in the air!! I think that was the largest rabbit on record I think it’s in Germany if I can remember correcttly?
Oh no idea, sorry.
But I can very well imagine that was in germany then we have many crazy breeders
Can you imagine what size the poop from a rabbit that big would be?!
On the other hand, you could take them and market them as organic golf balls. Sure you have to keep buying more, but they’re good for the environment. Think green!

hahahahahahhaaaaaaaa that brought tears to my eyes!!!!
I want to see him BINKY!
Found a couple more pics of the Giant Rabbits that really shows off their sizes:
And if you’d like to see what they look like as a female accessory:
Jebus! Where are those?
The breed was originally developed in Germany for a fast foodsource. Starving third world countries could raise them for meat. (I know I know).
However, just as many here have done, people have fallen in love with the big galloots so they’re slowly becoming pets. AS for me, I’d rather not have to deal with poos the size of golf balls.
Wow, that first pic is insane! I wonder if they are at all genetically modified or something. I mean, how would you get a rabbit that big? Chickens get hormones and stuff to become so unnaturally huge (which I feel is terribly wrong)
I can imagine him on the Cadbury bunny commercial with all the animals auditioning for the part…only he’d have the lion’s voice. ^_^
“BAWK-RAWR-BAWK!”
I don’t know much about breeding but my guess would be to keep on taking the largest of the litters and mating them. I doubt they’re genetically enegineered but I could be wrong.
No they were bred that way…As far as I know, no genetically engineered animals have been approved for consumption, just some plants
My god that would make a fantastic house alarm! Could you imagine a robber walking into your home and seeing one of these buns. I’m sure he won’t be sticking around very long! Sign on door will read *Beware of Buns” he’ll be laughing on the way in and crying on the way out!!!
Sooo…do they breed the lop eared ones as pets? I can’t imagine there’d be a difference in the ears unless they’re to be house rabbits?
Oh wee! Check pic of my living roomafter my giant bun
MR BIG did his first ever binky!
And Grandpawalking MR BIG in park.

o.m.g. I WANT ONE!
Wow, and I thought LIZZY could kick my butt! (Don’t tell her…I have her bluffed!). Really?! Those pics aren’t photoshopped?! Holy cow…rabbit…cow-sized-rabbit…!
!!!
there is a lady who lives here in england who has a rabbit called Amy, she is the largest rabbit in england.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-435487/Heavyweight-Amy-worlds-biggest-bunny.html
theres the link, ive actually met the woman who owns her and amys husband, there is a 3 year waiting list for their babies, i was kinda shocked by that.
I love them and would love to have one in the future i just kinda wonder it must be SO expensive? i get through a big bag of rabbit food every 2 weeks and they are quite expensive, not to mention veg and stuff.
Ps. i can also speak german but when it came to all that tenses stuff where you have to change like ich habe or ich spiele or ich werde i got confused.. lol
Yeah, really, can you imagine the expense of a big bunny like that??? I have three mini buns and they cost me more thant I could have imagined with the hay, pellets, litter and stuff. Imagine the serving of vegetables one of those bunnies eats?? I’d hate to buy lettuce for him here in the dead of winter when a head of romaine goes for 3.49!!!!!
i know! i spend like £4 a week on parsley alone! not to mention what you would need for a huge bunny
you would never have to worry about losing him under beds or couches!!!!
My grandfather raised Flemish giants for food. Apparently they are quite difficult to raise (granted that was as a food source, not as pets). I only know because I asked my mom if any of her rodent connections knew where to obtain one.
I’ll see if I can find out any more. However my grandfather passed away a good 10 years before I was born which means the breed is most likely at least 40-50 years old – quite possibly older.
I’m not sure if the food thing about the ones in Germany is completely true. According to the snopes article North Korea had purchased a mated pair to start a program to feed their population, however Kim Jong Il (however you spell his name) chose to have them for dinner at his birthday party instead.
Very sad
yeah it is sad, but at the end of the day if you eat pork/beef/lamb whatever you cant really blame people for eating rabbits, its a sad thruth, just because we have them as pets doesnt mean they arent a food stuff like ducks, i hate to think people would eat a duck because i think they are the most amazing creatures but sadly you cant pick and choose which meat is acceptable, its just one of those awful awful things which will never stop. If i had my way all meat products would be banned, there is no need for them whatsoever.
Here’s a link to more pictures…
http://centralpets.com/photos/mammals/rabbits/photo_rbt1418.html
These are british giants
I don’t eat anything that comes from an animal (not trying to get into that) but I still don’t understand how anyone who eats meat can eat something so cute and cuddly. Rabbits are really the only housepet species that is considered acceptable to eat. Cats and dogs, also popular housepets, aren’t bred on farms for food.
Well i consider ducks to be a pet (well perhaps not a pet but u know what i mean? i wouldnt consider them to be a food stuff), my cousins used to have loads of them and they were the most adorable things, were so friendly aswell, you would never think you could sit and pet a duck lol and yet there are plenty of farms to breed them for meat. Other people dont consider rabbits as pets at all, just something you hunt. Depends who you are i guess.
Anyway i think giant rabbits are adorable and i would love to have one! i think i will wait until one of u guys get one first so i can see how it goes LOL
I am an advocate of being an educated shopper and trying to know what you are buying – however, some people in other countries do not have that luxury.
If you are starving – you are going to take what you can get.
Actually –
Horses are commonly eaten in Europe.
I think I ate dog once in Mexico.
Dogs & cats are regularly eaten in Asia
Pigs are considered to be far smarter than dogs – a lot of us eat pork.
Chickens can live for 15 years – the ones in the grocery store are about 3 months old.
Lamb – they are pretty cute – typically 1 week under 1 year old – that is a lot older than those chickens.
We are really lucky to make the choice of what we eat – but not every one else does.
^^^ totally agree, what is normal to us isnt to others and vice versa, there is no point in being disgusted people eat rabbit because many do, in the same way some people are disgusted we eat pork. I think its best to just not eat any animals.
There are now pygmie pigs that are becoming fast pets.
I love pork
