hey everyone, my bunny is only about 12 weeks old and he hurt his foot about a week ago and that triggered stasis. He was dragging his rear foot and in a lot of pain. The vet gave him gabapentn and meloxicam. His foot is doing better finally and he is putting weight back on it slowly. He is still on both medications. That being said, he isn’t really eating too much hay and I’ve tried a few different kinds. He will eat his Timothy hay treat and some pellets. He is also pooping but they are still sometimes small and hard. Overall he’s just not drinking and eating as much. I’m still giving critical care about once a day. Is there anything else I can do? Is this just normal when recovering from stasis to take a bit for them to get their appetites back?

It has been documented that gabapentin can cause decreased appetite in rabbits. So even though he is probably feeling better, the medication could be contributing to him not wanting to eat as much.

Yes, he is drinking water and peeing. He is still struggling with gas because I hear loud gurgling and almost like he can’t get comfortable. I’ve been giving him gas drops and massages which seem to help. He ate better today but is still not eating normally. I did read about the gabapentin. The vet said that he can come off of it now, along with the meloxicam. So I hope it does okay for him! I’m just concerned taking him off the pain meds might cause more issues.

You could try tapering off the gabapentin first and then the meloxicam, just so he’s not stopped all of them cold turkey?

Yes, I think tapering may be helpful.
