I have a 7 year old French lop, Harper who went to the emerg vet Tuesday night. I caught him in early GI stasis. He was sent home with critical care every 6 hours.

long story short, he saw his regular exotic vet the very next morning. They said continue with critical care and I’m also giving a pain med and motility med to get the gut moving.

it took a day but yesterday when he got home he finally started making poops and pees and the poops looked better as time went on. He didn’t eat hay or drink water but he would nibble on a piece or 2 of parsley sometimes.

this morning I thought he was doing way better. He finished all the parsley and ate half the pellets. Still no hay or water.

i just got home from work and it looks like he peed more. Half the pellets are gone (I never refilled it from this mornint) and no hay eaten. Looks like there’s more oval shaped poops but there is a dark brown/black smear of poop. Maybe it’s cecos that got smushed.

I remember the ER receptionist telling me critical care can make the poops a darker color and not to worry. I just want some reassurance that this is ok. My regular exotic vet doesn’t have a bunny expert there today so I can’t get much help from them.

Also update- he is still much more like himself today. I gave him dinner veggies and he finished pretty much right away. He just finished off the rest of his morning pellets now (8pm)

he’s purring during pets and kisses. I went to give my other bunny a treat and Harper actually ran to the front of his cage when he heard the “clink” of the treat jar! He’s also come out to greet me.

I cleaned his litter box so it’s all fresh now and there been normal (aka not wet dark mush) poops. Not always perfect circles but of course I’ll take it. Some of them are a little smaller than the previous ovals I was starting to see.
but he seems in good spirits, his ears aren’t cold. He doesn’t look lethargic like he did on Tuesday and Wednesday- when he was super unwell.

I’m glad you took him in and he’s doing better!

And yes sometimes there can be weird poops after a GI episode due to the meds and everything, it’s just great that he’s pooping!
