I called the vet today (Wednesday) and asked for an appointment to get him neutered, thinking it’d be in a couple weeks so I can be prepared and handle it lol. Nope. They have an opening for this Friday! I took it, idk what I was thinking! I’m so nervous for him, he’s so little

What sorts of things should I do to get him ready, what to take with him, and what to do when he’s home?

I was very nervous and rattled about Buddie’s neuter and I had the additional worry that he might have seizures when coming out of the anesthesia.  He didn’t.  Sounds like you don’t need to be concerned about that.  Everything will go fine, you’ll probably be given some Metacam to give him which he can take from the plastic syringe or you can squirt into a little well you make in a little chunk of banana, put the lid of the piece you took out of the banana back on, and give to him, which I had to do for Buddie.  You might want to put a couple pieces of hay in his carrier when you’re bringing him home. The vet will prepare you for everything you need to do for him after his neuter.  When I got Buddie home after his neuter, he was still groggy from the sedation he had been under and he just went into his enclosed litter box and lay down and went into a deep sleep with his chin resting on the rim of the door. About an hour later he hopped into his lower room in his cardboard mini-haven and remained there for the night, sleeping off the sedation.   I just left him alone with enough pellets, hay, and water  to help himself when he was ready which it didn’t turn out was until the next day when he was eating again after he came out from being under sedation. You may want to examine his sutures to make sure that is all well and good.  In the unusual case that he isn’t eating or pooping at all by the morning after he’s home again, you would bring him back to the vet for syringe feeding, the vet will let you know.   Buddie was eating about 15 pellets by the afternoon so gradually was eating again and I didn’t need to bring him in for syringe feeding.  Best to give your bunny peace and quiet when you get him home back in his envirmonment.  How old is your bunny?  Do you have him in a cage or exercise pen or is your place bunny proofed for free-roaming?   It’s only natural to worry about an upcoming neuter but try to stay calm and relaxed as this will help your bunny too, and remember that everything will go fine and you’ll be given full instructions of what to do which you’ll handle just fine.

That’s actually wonderful, because it will be over before you know it. All vets should make themselves available, along with their staff, to answer any of your questions both before and after.

Allow him to be as comfortable as possible when he gets home. Think soft, so possibly get some softer litter for just the first few days if your regular is not as gentle. He may like to lie on a fleece cushion, or if he’s like Samantha, the smooth plastic floor of a cage may actually feel better to him. Let him decide.
Don’t be scared if he has little or no energy for about 48 hours. Just be sure he drinks water and is pooping. Let him nibble whatever tastes good to him first to get some nutrition, then gradually go back to his regular routine. Soak his greens in a lot of water so if he doesn’t use your crock or water bottle he’ll still get hydrated from eating.

A lot depends on the type of anesthesia and stitches they use. Dissolving are convenient, so I hope that’s what you get.
Keep him on one level. Jumping can pull the wound before it heals, so no platforms in his cage for about a week.
To examine his stitches as the Dr. will want you to do, hold a tasty treat (raisin?) above his face so he has to stand up to get it. Put a hand mirror on the floor or hold it low so you can see his underside while he is standing up. that way you won’t have to pick him up to look, which he will resist. Discoloration at first is natural, just watch for increasing redness or swelling, and call the vet anytime with a report or questions. Remember, a phone call is free, and she knows your bunny best.

wow, thanks so much. lots of detail lol. He is about 7.5 months old now, and he is free range in my bathroom and theres also a little room that’s off the bathroom (it’s a really oddly laid out apartment lol). He also gets free run of my bedroom when I’m home but I’m thinkin ill try to limit that because he likes to jump up on my bed and binky like crazy up there. Might have to limit that so he doesnt rip open his incision.

Pam, Vader is a lot like your Samantha, he prefers hard surfaces. He thinks beds and fleece and soft stuff are for chewing and digging and rearranging his room lol. I have never seen him lay on anything soft other than my plushy bathmat. Guess I’ll keep that down for him to lay on. And I’ll throw some extra carefresh on top of his feline pine. He hates his pellets to begin with so I guess I’ll pick up some more veggies and esp parsley and cilantro, his favs lol.

Thanks guys, I’m so nervous but it’ll be nice to have it over with!!! Heh Monkey, I’ll be sure to ask how much he weighs. I have a feeling he’s beefed up from him previous 2.3lbs

Hugs to you & ur buuny!

My bunny got neutered last Sunday and he is doing absolutely great now. Fixed bunnies don’t give off the stench.

                        Healing vibes!

He’s home and he’s alive lol and still very woozy and not really all there, it’s kinda funny and sad. He’s staying in his carrier for the night as per instructions from the vet cause he is falling over a lot lol. I have a little ceramic bowl of water in there and a pile of his favorite hay and some watercress. He’s actually been eating them with some excitement (he goes crazy for orchard grass) but he’s still pretty messed up so he gets a mouthful, falls asleep, chews a little, falls asleep, etc. It’s pretty cute.

Haha even in his blitzed state of mind, his litterbox habits are solid. I checked on him in his carrier and noticed he hadnt peed or pooped yet and we’d been home for like 5 hours, so I let him out to see what he’d do… ran straight (well not very straight, he fell over a couple times) to his litterbox and peed a river, poor guy. Now he’s spending his time sleeping in his hut and being pissed off at the world.

Yeah! Sounds like he’s doing well. The fact that he would still try to eat right after surgery is a good sign. Tomorrow he should be feeling much more perky. IF he is still falling over though tomorrow – still sort of “drunk”. You will need to talk to the vet. I don’t remember my bunny falling over when he got neutered, but also, he didn’t want to move at all, so there could be the answer to that! Also, it sounds like you were able to pick him up pretty soon after surgery so he may have been a bit more out of then if you were only allowed to pick him up later.

The fact though that he was already eating and using his litterbox so soon afterward really is such a good sign that he’s already on the road to recovery.

he’s been munching his hay big time, drinking, and I forgot to close his door and also the gate in the bedroom (double whoops), so while I was in the living room he decided to come see what I was doing. I had to scold him for too much running. He’s not terribly drunk acting anymore, seems to have gotten his balance back, although his eyes still look funky. He came and checked on me again so now I’m sitting with him in his room and he’s happy now lol. He peed again and I even found some poops But his snoring is extra loud tonight, poor guy is wiped out.

How worried should I be about him messing with his incision? I have to work tomorrow at 4pm and I’ll be gone about 9 hours.. should I come home on break to check on him quick or should he be okay if he hasn’t messed with it by 4?

Congrats on such a great recovery so far!

That’s great that he’s doing so well since the neuter and eating and pooping and peeing and everything.  If you haven’t noticed him bothering his incision sounds like you won’t need to check on him at lunchtime but I guess if he were my bun, I would anyway.  Leaving him in the carrier while you’re at work sounds like a good idea as MrBear suggested.  Did your vet give you Metacam to give him?  If so, it’s probably doubly sure that he won’t feel any pain and so won’t bother his incision.

Well, I was home with him til 4pm, then I went to work. But he was fine, not bothering it any, so I let him stay in his room to do his own thing. Then when I came home after work, he was all binkies to see me lol. Lots of hay gone, he ate a big bowl of green leaf lettuce, and lots of poops. No metacam, but he doesn’t seem to be in any pain that I’ve noticed, unless he’s just being tough. But I figured the binkies were a good sign.

He doesn’t have to go back in for stitches to be out, so I was wondering.. How long does this normally take to heal up completely, that he can go places with me again and stuff?

That’s the greatest sign yet, that he’s all binkies to see you…it means he loves you and appreciates the great care you are giving him!  If he were my bun I’d give him a week and a half, two to be sure he’s healed completely before taking him around, etc. but some will tell you 3 or 4 weeks.  Since he isn’t bothering his incision and is binkying, hel’ll probably be safe to go out after a couple weeks.  Just make sure he doesn’t  binky open his incision!!  …Just kidding, he won’t, of course!  More binkies to you…..!!!

Yea! He’s doing great, and is definitely not in any pain since he’s so active. I actually agree with lashkay and say that two weeks is the most you need to wait, as long as nothing happens to set him back. Just watch for swelling or redness, but since he’s fully functional with his digestion, I don’t think you need to worry much now. I think it’s about a week until the stitches have safely done their work. If he’s happy with you at home, stick around for a couple of weeks and enjoy him. He sounds like such a sweetie-pie.

yay I’m so glad it’s been a pretty positive experience. This little rabbit has done so much for me, I’ve only had him since new year’s eve but I’d be so devastated if anything happened to him. He just brings a lot of joy to my life especially during a recent rough patch. I’m so glad I have him… for knowing just about nothing when I got him, I still ended up with a sweet funny little rabbit that somehow perfectly matches me.
