okay so hello! recently,I just got off the phone with one of my friends and she asked me if female bunnies are great as pets but I can’t answer her properly due to the fact that I’ve never actually encountered with a female bunbun,,as rn I only have male buns! so what do you guys think? what was your experience adopting a female bun? also at what age exactly do you have to spay your girl? and also hehe what is your diet for female bunny? actually, I once saw on some website that said about how female buns are more likely to get overweight easily if you don’t take care of their diet compared to male buns!?!so yeah please help me! also If they do make great companions,I’ll also try to think of adopting a female bunny as there are lots of poor cute bunnies at the shelter waiting to get adopted 🙁

Male and female rabbit care is identical — the exception would be that females have an astronomically higher rate of reproductive-related cancer (i.e., uterine cancer) than the male counterpart (i.e., testicular); therefore, spaying a female rabbit is generally considered a requirement, while neutering a male rabbit who will be single and is not overly hormonal in behavior is not as necessary. Regardless of hormonal behavior, spaying a female rabbit is necessary for long-term health and cancer prevention.

Usually females must be at least 6mo to be spayed, as spaying any early risks an unsuccessful spay as everything may not be “developed” enough to remove it all. The recovery period for a spay is also longer since spays are more invasive than neuters. For more information, please see here: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Spaying_and_neutering_rabbits

Re: females being overweight — unsure where that finding comes from, but it might be a misconception due to female dewlap formation. Dewlaps are just fat and they will continue to grow for intact females which can create the appearance of being “fat”. A female rabbit who is spayed early will have a pretty small dewlap compared to one spayed later in life.

oh thank you! I honestly do recommend spaying/neutering buns,,it’s just that I heard from some articles that male bunnies are more friendly compared to female bunnies,,so basically there are lots of people who overthinks on whether to get female bunnies and male bunnies,,but honestly even me myself am thinking on adopting female bunnies but I’m just scared that they’ll be more territorial or like aggressive-

YEAH so in your experience, what was it like having girl bunnies? are they lovely and sweet? I know it depends on their personality but does the way they were brought up since small influence their personality too?

Personally, in my N=2 where one is a male and one is a female, my female rabbit who I adopted at 1yo (vs. my male rabbit who I got at 8wo) has 1) superbly better litterbox habits (than any other rabbit I’ve interacted with, as a volunteer at two rabbit rescues, haha) and 2) goes out of her regularly to request pets from me while she lounges by my feet. Comparatively, my male (who again, I’ve had since he was 8wo and he’s now 5yo) is much easier to handle and agreeable to it; however, he tends to be more lunge-y and such when caught off guard.

In short, sex-generalizations don’t really inform individual, case-by-case scenarios at all, so they are practically not helpful. How your friend interacts and cares for the rabbit as well as learns about the rabbit’s personality and shapes it will be the primary and arguably largest factor in the quality of their relationship, as opposed to the rabbit’s sex.

I’ve had I think about a 50/50 split of males and females, and my girls have been wonderful. My bridge bunny Bertha was the friendliest sweetest rabbit I have ever met.

Spaying is important but other than that the care is the same. I think if she likes the bun, she should go for it, regardless of the bun’s sex.
