        so as most of you have heard  from my last posts that baxter has been having troubles with his litter box habits and because hes not neutered it is the most likely reason why. So ive moved his neutering for next week or the week after. i phoned  a few veternarian practises in a city about 30 mins away from my town. the first one i phoned said that rabbit spaying and neutering are very high risk , is that true? the other twoi phoned said they had done many of them and theve never had any complications. so can you tell me anything to expect after the surgery, like how will he act and will i have to give him any medicine.

          Any surgery on animals or humans is risky. Just be sure to see an experienced rabbit vet. In the FAQ section of the forum theres a section on “Spay/Neuter Questions “. I recommend you have a read and follow the links there to help find a good rabbit vet in your area. Well done on taking this step and asking these questions!

              Congrats!

              I’d think the place you phoned that said it’s very high risk, likely isn’t comfortable doing them. It’s as risky as any surgery but you should have a good confident vet do it. Sounds like the others you phoned were better.

              Presurgery, you’ll want to keep him eating and drinking-absolutely no fasting.
              The day of-bring him with his food, and fav veggies so he’ll be encourage to eat after the surgery.
              Don’t leave without pain medication. If they say they don’t usually give it, put your foot down and request it. Metacam tastes good and iis commonly given-don’t leave the vet without. Pain causes rabbits to stop eating and that can kill them. They may do fine without them but they’ll do better with them. THey may send you home with a cone and they may not. Most rabbits in my experience take the cone off themselves and ignore the stitiches so they do fine either way.
              Make sure he’s eating and drinking. You might want to have ‘pedialyte’ ‘critical care’ baby food (pumpkin/apple/banana) on hand and some syringes in case he doesn’t eat after wards, but they usually do especially if you have some favorites on hand.
              Also you’ll need to check the incision sites twice a day for about ten days or until the sutures are taken out;

              All in all its stressful on us, but pretty routine and very good for their health and behavior!! You’ll be fine

                  the spraying SHOULD go away, it’s very likely to go away. that being said, i can’t *guarantee* that it will, b/c the longer you wait to have the neuter done, the more the spraying may become habit, but even if it does not go away completely, it should lessen a great deal. it’s good he’s being neutered before one year, that gives me great hope that he will stop spraying.

                  K&K’s advice is great. i agree about the vet who said it’s very high risk. they don’t sound confident or comfortable to perform it. some vets would rather say it’s too dangerous and try to dissuade you, than admit that they are not good at something or don’t know how… this might or might not be the case, but if the vet is not confident, i would not be confident in them.

                  a neuter is a simpler procedure than a spay. in most cases, the boys bounce back very quickly, within 24 hours they are eating and pooping and acting somewhat normally. i bet he will do just fine!
