Right now I have a 7 month old Holland Lop named Freyja. She’s very playful, but my cats and dogs tend to be lazy so when she starts chasing them they don’t do anything. I would really love to get her a friend but I need some advice. I am planning on getting her spayed within the next month or so. Should I have her spayed and then get her a friend? The new bunny would come from a local breeder (there are no rabbits in shelters near me) and would most likely be too young to be spayed or neutered.

All rabbits that are to be bonded need to be spayed/neutered first so even if you got a young bun, you’d have to wait til she’s spayed before you can think of bonding her with your current bun.

I actually also have a super active Holland lop and I’m planning to get him a friend after he is neutered! Our story is very similar Lilli!

And I agree with sarahthegemini. She is right when she says all rabbits have to be fixed before bonding. Even though one of the rabbits will already be spayed/neutered, it is still important to spay/neuter the other one as well. This decreases humping fighting and other harmful things, even though some humping may occur if they’re both fixed. And you definitely want to fix your current rabbit or else you will end up with babies!

The rabbit friend I’m getting for my Holland lop is already spayed because I have a local shelter that has rabbits. You also want to make sure that the rabbit you get, is the opposite gender than the one you currently have. I’m not saying you can’t have a male/male or a female/female but it is recommended to have a female/ male. Opposite genders tend to get along better than the same genders.

Lastly, if the new rabbit you get is too young to be spayed/neutered, I’d keep it in a separate cage than your current rabbit until it gets fixed. In the meantime, you can even do some pre-bonding which can be switching each others litterboxes, switching cages, (etc.)

I actually have a question myself: how long do I have to wait after my rabbit is neutered to bring home the new bunny and start bonding?

Around 1 month, to be safe. You want to make sure that his hormones have dissipated and sometimes bunnies have a “post neuter craze” and they get more hormonal and act totally wacko.

                  Lili,

You would have to keep them completely separate until the new rabbit was old enough to be spayed and has had one month to recover. It will be a long, long process if you get another baby bun. Just something to consider before you do.
