Getting A Rabbit Soon! Supplies?

I’m getting a rabbit really soon and I’m SUPER excited!! I decided to Join a rabbit forum so I get the most information possible! Ive been researching for about 2
years now! My house is pretty small so I’m only allowed having one pet at a time. Since my hamsters recently passed I’m still sad about that, I think maybe getting a new furry buddy will cheer me up! Since I know rabbits are lovely animals. I’m planning on getting one rabbit, since I’ll be home most of the time. I’ll be home right after school. I’m planning on keeping him or her downstairs in a DIY C&C grid cage and making a wall of C&C grids as an extra exercising place so I can keep him entertained and happy. I’m planning on rabbit proofing my room too and I can bring him upstairs to my room when I get home so I can do my homework and be able to interact with him. Of course there will be massive changes after I get it but it’s a plan for now. I also wrote down some things I’m gonna need for him/her. I’m happy to take in suggestions

C&C Grids (Of Course!)
Cat Nail Clippers
Oxbow Adult Rabbit Pellets (I’m adopting a older rabbit at my local shelter!)
Timothy Hay
Kennel
Litter Box
Litter (not sure what type yet!)
Fleece and Mats
Chews, Boxes, and Toys
Few pet brushes
Oxbow Digestive Treats (forgot what it’s called..)
Bowls and Dishes
Maybe a Harness, I might take him into my backyard
Dust Pan and Broom
Scale?
Syringes for feeding (Ya never know!)

Those are all the things I’m planning to get and prepare before I go adopt a bunny! I’m going to make the cage after I get the rabbit since I want to make sure that the cage suits the rabbit I’m getting. I’m going to buy all the grids and keep him
in the carrier or a safe room when I build the cage!

Is there anything I should get or prepare for? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!! The rabbits are all spayed and neutered, dewormed, and got the shots needed!

I suggest you get cable covers of this type: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20281419/ and some electrical tape, to bunny proof your room. They often like to chew cables and as you probably realize, that’s dangerous for both the bun and the humans.

I weigh my buns on digital kitchen scales, I put them in a bowl. (Not together).

Cardboard boxes to use as hidey-houses are good to have. Some bunnies appreciate a tunnel.

And I always keep simethicone (baby gas drops) in my fridge, it’s great for tummy issues.

For litter, you said you are unsure.
 
I personally use bedding pellets (or stove pellets in Bam’s case) which you can buy in bulk for pretty cheap at a “feed” store(If you have a feed store in your area, check there first as they generally don’t have a “middle man” and sell a lot of items cheaper) or at a hardware store for the stove type. Just make sure they are screened to avoid dust. Avoid cat litter as it most of the time contains clay which can be bad for a little bun.

Definitely agree with Bam on a hidey house! Buns need their alone time just like we do! (or a dark cozy spot to sleep in my bunnys’ case)

You could also get some other varieties of hay, such as orchard grass or meadow hay. Some rabbits can be picky about hay and may not like Timothy as much as they like other kinds of hay.

Most of the people here are not in favor of harnesses for rabbits. They can be dangerous and there are many things outdoors that can frighten a rabbit or parasites that can be picked up by your rabbit, so it’s really best to keep rabbits indoors.

It’s very nice that you are adopting a rabbit from a local shelter.

If you are going to get a harness I would suggest getting one from the cat section. They have H harnesses, and frankly, after experimenting with Chom and Speckles, I have found these to fit the best on a bunny. They look like these.

A lot of people dislike harnesses, and for understandable reasons. I put mine in harnesses so we can take them to the farmers market that is right around the block for us. They love going to visit the vendors, and are given lots of small veggies by pretty much everyone. And we are very very very cautious when they are on the harnesses. Luckily both of our rabbits don’t startle, or are easily scared, so it makes it less stressful for everyone.

I’d also suggest a small stuffed animal, and a rabbit first aid kit. Whether you make your own, or buy a prepared one, it will come in handy when the time comes. Stocking vinegar is a must for bunny cleaning too. I always tend to buy it when it comes on sale in the big jugs, and normally have at least 3 gallons in my apartment at any point and time.
