Would it be irresponsible of me to get a bunny without a bunny date?  A woman has two baby holland lop bunnies (she thought her buns were fixed but they weren’t).   And also, she said she “thinks” they are female but not absolutely sure.  Is there an easy way to sex a rabbit?  We will be getting her fixed no matter what, but how can I be absolutely sure they are females?

It’s not “irresponsible”. There is really very little point in doing a bunny date with an adult and a baby as the baby’s personality at 8 weeks may be completely different from the personality at 6 months and again at one year. I’d recommend that you not even begin to bond until the baby has been altered and healed up for a month. Some folks go thru the whole process with an unaltered bunny and they either waste their time and never get anywhere, or they make progress but when the baby bun goes to get neuter/spayed they have to start over at square one with bonding.

Are there any rescues in your area where you could do bunny dates with adult, altered buns? That is the ideal b/c you know the personality and you don’t have to go thru the time/expense/worry of waiting and then altering yourself.

This is a possibility regardless of whether you do bunny dates or not, altered or not, adult or not.  There is never a guarantee that two buns will be able to bond.  Most *can* with time and patience and the right environment, but you must be prepared for the possibility that they may not bond and they may need to be housed separately for the remainder of their lives with separate playtime.  As long as you’re willing to make that commitment and you have the time, space and funds, there is no reason to not adopt another bun.

You must be careful putting baby rabbits with full grown rabbits too because of injury – sometimes the adults can become aggressive and injure the babies or scare the babies.

As for telling the sex – first I would try to compare them to see if their sex organs look alike – females will be a slit and males will be an “o”. Sometimes comparing them helps to tell sexes – if they are both the same then they are the same sex and at least you can tell that way.

I think they’re gone anyhow. Our area is having a Rabbit Day at the end of the month where they have a lot of info about house rabbits, and some rescues will be there with some buns. They also said you can bring your rabbit and there are places to “bunny date”. So we might bring Ruffles.
